Don’ts in IELTS

There are some common factors that committed by the candidates which can reduce the scores of IELTS. So we will have a discussion on some don’ts in IELTS which will help you to get good scores.

Here is a list of things which candidate’s do in their exam but they should avoid such things as they might decrease your scores. You need to avoid the below mentioned things as examiners look for these things in your test.

1. Don’t answer the question in a hurry

What the candidates need to do is that they should take a second to think about the points they wish to put forward in their IELTS speaking exam. By taking 1 or 2 seconds you can arrange your thoughts into a meaningful answer. But remember that you should not take a lot of time before you start to speak.

In 2nd part of IELTS speaking test, which is a cue card, you should prepare some notes using the pen and paper provided to you. You can write down some bullet points on the paper which may help you while speaking the cue topic.

For the IELTS listening test, you get some time before the recording starts to play, in that time what you can do is just read the questions and prepare yourself to listen the answer.

2. If you don’t understand the question then don’t answer it

There might be some questions in the IELTS speaking test, that either may not be audible or not understood by you. In that case you can simply ask the examiner to repeat the question. But you should always remember that you cannot ask to repeat each and every question again and again. It might put bad impression.

3. Sometimes you might speak a wrong word in a hurry or nervousness. At that time what you can do is to correct yourself. If you spoke wrong word by mistake, you can correct it. This will show that you know what the correct word was and you are able to correct your own mistakes.

4. Don’t give memorized answers

You should not memorize any answer and speak in your IELTS speaking test, because the examiner, in no time, will find that you have already memorized the answer that you are giving. If you give already scripted answer then it might decrease your scores.

5. Don’t use big words

In IELTS writing and speaking test what some students do is, they try to fit uncommon or complicated words. You should only use them if you know the correct meaning of them and you know where they can be used. Some students may fit them at incorrect places thinking that they are using a different or varied word. You may lose your points. If you try to do the same thing by fitting unnecessary words at incorrect places.

6. Avoid using that grammar you are not sure about

You should be aware of grammatical things when using them in your IELTS test. You need to be well aware with the verbs, tenses, transitions, connectors and many more. If you are familiar with these things then only you should use them. Because your can be decreased if you use them incorrectly.

7. Don’t leave anything blank or unspoken

In your IELTS speaking test, you should answer all the questions and don’t sit quietly because this test is to judge your language skills, they will be judged only if you speak the answer. In IELTS writing, you should not leave the answering space blank because here also you are judged on the basis of what you write. This thing even applies to the IELTS listening and reading tests as well. If you don’t know the answer in these 2 tests, make a guess but never leave the answering space blank.

8. Main point should never be forgotten by you

You scores can be affected, if you get off the track. You should stay on the main point only while doing IELTS writing or speaking test. If you will waste time by giving unnecessary information, your scores can be reduced.

9. Don’t get nervous

It is natural to feel some nervousness while doing something for the first time. But you should not let this nervousness get your performance down. You can try some breathing exercises, you can take some time to get comfortable with the environment, have a proper meal before your exam, have a good sleep and get well prepared before your IELTS test.

10. Don’t get late on the day of your examination

You should be punctual, you need to be on proper time in your IELTS test, you should not reach late at the venue. As sometime is needed before the commencement of the exam for registration, and sit in the exam hall. Being late for the exam is not a good way to start the exam. Hence, you are recommended to reach before the given time.
