Many of the aspirants are confused about the difference between formal and informal writing in IELTS. Thus, making it a frequently asked question so today we will discuss about the difference between formal and informal writing task.

Well it depend upon what test are you preparing for if it is Academic IELTS test than both Task 1 and 2 in writing test will be formal. In the General Training test in task 2 i.e. essay will be formal but in Task 1 it can formal or informal as per the demand of the question. In General Training Task 1 is a letter and if it says to write someone you know than it will be informal otherwise it will be informal.

 The main difference between formal and informal in the vocabulary used in it. As the word “Informal” depicts to be casual as while talking or writing to someone who is close to you and the words you use in it are not heavy instead, you use simple and daily routine words. On the other hand, while talking to a stranger or any officer we use some formal words as in books, contracts or in letters and essays. This is applicable in IELTS writing exam if question demands to write informal matter avoid using formal vocabulary as write as you are writing to one of your friend and it’s vice versa for the formal matter. 

In the IELTS writing it is expected that you should write in formal writing style as in your school.

You should not use slang word or abbreviations like instead of writing didn’t write did not. Your sentences should be completed. Below are the some additional features of formal writing:

Formal writing:

Organize ideas into separate paragraphs: Your essay should not be in one paragraph it should be divided in sections Introduction paragraph followed by 2 or 3 body paragraphs and at last the conclusion. If you don’t follow this pattern you will definitely lose your marks.

Write in complete sentences: Second thing you should keep in mind that every sentence has an independent clause with a subject and verb. Use connectors in complex and compound sentences like and, but, when, because.

Avoid repetition of words and ideas:  Try not to use any word again and again and write synonyms even your ideas should be interconnected and should move logically.

No Slangs: Don’t use slangs in the test as it will impact your scores.

Thoughtful and Neutral Tone: Your writing should be in a neutral manner and should not show any anger, excitement or any personal feelings. If you don’t like anything you should not consider that everyone is like you and instead of writing that No one like this you should say Most of the people don’t like this.
