What is Grammar ?
The systematic description of the features of each and every language is known as grammar which includes basic axioms such as verb tenses, articles and adjectives and their proper order, how questions are phrased, and much more. Each and every language cannot function without grammar as well as without grammatical accuracy , it simply makes no sense.
Thus , people require grammar to communicate effectively. As everybody knows that communication ( speaking ) is the first parameter of every language which is a action of conveying information in speech. It is followed by rest of the three parameters , such as listening , reading and writing , therefore Grammar is the most essential factor of every language.
What is the Role of Grammar in IELTS ?
Many IELTS candidates have this question in their mind while they undergo IELTS Test preparation.
The answer of this question is “a big yes”.
How it is ?
Actually , grammar plays a crucial role in getting high IELTS scores.
It is rightly said that Grammar is the backbone of all the languages whether it is English, Hindi, Punjabi or other languages. And, it is imperative for IELTS Test too as IELTS contains all skills of a language .
Adequate and appropriate knowledge of Grammar is essential for all the four skills tested in IELTS Exam – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. However, the level of its importance varies from one module to another.
● Actually , there is no actual grammar test section in the IELTS test.
● In Listening and Reading modules , having sufficient knowledge of grammatical rules is necessary for IELTS candidates in order to get more than desirable band scores.
● However, candidates are graded on the basis of grammar by the examiner in the speaking and writing test of IELTS.
Role of Grammar in IELTS Listening & Reading Module
As Listening and Reading do not require any presentation in the form of writing and communicating , so Grammar does not play an essential role in Listening and Reading modules, however proper grammatical knowledge is still needed to select correct answers. The choice of answers somehow depends on the Grammar which in turn affects band Scores of candidates.
Role of Grammar in IELTS Writing Module
In IELTS Writing – Academic and General Training Tests, candidates are given two tasks. Task 1 demands 150 words, while in Task 2 250 words are needed to write.
> These writing tasks are examined as per the following four criteria
– Task Achievement (for Task 1) / Task Response (for Task 2),
– Coherence & Cohesion
– Lexical Resource
– Grammatical Range & Accuracy
Here, Grammar constitutes almost 25% of total Writing Scores.
So, no matter how good is candidates’ vocabulary , they will not be able to generate a meaningful and interesting content if their Grammar is not good.
Role of Grammar in IELTS Speaking Module
Just like IELTS Writing, Speaking Test is also evaluated on the basis of four major criteria :-
– Fluency & Coherence
– Lexical Resource
– Grammatical Range & Accuracy
– Pronunciation
So, Grammar makes up to 25% of IELTS Speaking Scores.
In Speaking Test, candidates need to actively use different grammar structures in order to express their ideas clearly. At the same time, they need to be as fluent as possible. Thus, when they are speaking, they need to ensure that they are grammatically correct and their answers make sense properly.
THE EIGHT PARTS OF SPEECH
There are eight parts of speech in the English language: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection. The part of speech indicates how the word functions in meaning as well as grammatically within the sentence. An individual word can function as more than one part of speech when used in different circumstances. Understanding parts of speech is essential for determining the correct definition of a word in all modules of IELTS.
1) NOUN
A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea.
man… College… house… happiness
Nouns are often used with an article (the, a, an), but not always. Proper nouns always start with a capital letter; common nouns do not. Nouns can be singular or plural, concrete or abstract. Nouns show possession by adding ‘s. Nouns can function in different roles within a sentence; for instance, a noun can be a subject, direct object, indirect object, subject complement, or object of a preposition.
For example :- The young girl brought me a very long letter from the teacher. Oh!
2) PRONOUN
A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun.
She… we… they… it
A pronoun is usually substituted for a specific noun, which is called its antecedent. Pronouns are further defined by type: personal pronouns refer to specific persons or things; relative pronouns introduce a subordinate clause; and demonstrative pronouns identify, point to, or refer to nouns.
For example :- The young girl brought me a very long letter from the teacher, and then she quickly went back. Oh!
3) VERB
A verb expresses action or being.
jump… is… write… become
There is a main verb and sometimes one or more helping verbs. (“She can sing.” Sing is the main verb; can is the helping verb.) A verb must agree with its subject in number (both are singular or both are plural). Verbs also take different forms to express tense.

4) ADJECTIVE
An adjective modifies or describes a noun or pronoun.
pretty… old… blue… smart
It usually answers the question of which one, what kind, or how many. (Articles [a, an, the] are usually classified as adjectives.)
For example :- The young girl brought me a very long letter from the teacher, and then she quickly went back. Oh!
5)ADVERB
An adverb modifies or describes a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
gently… extremely… carefully… well
It is never a noun , It usually answers the questions of when, where, how, why, under what conditions, or to what degree. Adverbs often end with – LY.

6) PREPOSITION
A preposition is a word placed before a noun or pronoun to form a phrase modifying another word in the sentence.
by… with…. about… until
(by the tree, with our friends, about the book, until tomorrow)
Therefore, a preposition is always part of a prepositional phrase. The prepositional phrase almost always functions as an adjective or as an adverb.
For example :- The young girl brought me a very long letter from the teacher, and then she quickly went back. Oh!
7) CONJUNCTION
A conjunction joins words, phrases, or clauses.
and… but… or… while… because
A conjunction joins words, phrases, or clauses, and indicates the relationship between the elements joined.
Coordinating conjunctions connect grammatically equal elements: and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet.
Subordinating conjunctions connect clauses that are not equal: because, although, while, since, etc. There are other types of conjunctions as well.

8) INTERJECTION
An interjection is a word used to express emotion.
Oh!… Wow!… Oops!
An interjection is a word used to express emotion. It is often followed by an exclamation point.

NOTE :-
This is not to suggest that IELTS candidates should focus only on grammar as the other 3 elements in speaking and writing are also essential. Both their ability to answer the question and organizing the response of provided question in writing and speaking are a major part of the marking in IELTS.
But it is clearly important to work on improving IELTS grammar, and this is often the part candidates have the most problems with and the thing that brings their score down.
Now , it is perfectly clear that In IELTS test, Grammar is awarded a separate band score in both the Speaking and Writing modules. Candidates are assessed on their ability to use correct and appropriate grammar and on the range of sentence types.
Even simple sentences need to be written accurately but in order to raise band scores, students also need to be able to show that they can use some complex sentence types and have an understanding of the relevant tenses and structures.
