How to Utilize 1 Min Given Before Speaking Using the Cue Card?

In the IELTS speaking task 2 i.e. cue card you have to speak for 2 minutes and for the preparation 1 minute is given. This 1 minute is very important for the aspirant as one have to get prepared in this time limit.  Many test takers get nervous and are not able to utilize this time. Today we will discuss how to take maximum benefit of this time to score good grades in speaking.

STRATEGY:

You should use this time very wisely as this is the foundation for your cue card speaking. First of generate an idea to answer the question then write down the relevant keywords that come in your mind and also some good vocabulary words if some of them click your mind. All this things will help you to speak for a long time

Let’s take an example on how to implement 1 minute strategy.
Examiner gives you the following cue card along with a pen and paper:
Describe a place you visited recently

– What the place was

– Where it was

– What you did there

– Describe why you enjoyed there

Examiner gives you 1 minute to prepare on this cue card.
Now you can start writing keywords as follows without wasting the time:

– Wonder, Taj Mahal

– Agra, Last month, in Train

–  Night view, Boating, Museum

– Fun, relief from stress, amazing, memorable, First journey by train

After 1 minute is over (by this time, all keywords get imprinted in your mind), then speak on the topic using these keywords.

– Mind-mapping– It is an effective method to remember things. In this you can think about the following apart from the points you will speak on.

– Vocabulary: You should write connectors and vocabulary as it is seen that often students forget to use them or while speaking their mind don’t drive the suitable words.

 – Idioms: Using idioms will make your speaking more effective this is also recommended to write 1 or2 idioms that can be used.

Some Important Tips for 1 Minute Preparation and Speaking

– Be quick to think about the topic and generate an idea that can be elaborated.

– Understand the demand of topic to avoid score deduction because of wrong task response.

– Note the important information as keywords and print them in your mind.

– Be confident and don’t show any nervousness during the test specially while writing keywords for the cue card

– Write only keywords not full sentences

– Keep on thinking about the topic while speaking.

– Write the keywords clearly so that they can be read easily.

– Make a visual of the topic in your mind this will give you more matter.
