HOW TO WRITE AN ESSAY IN IELTS WRITING TASK 2

In general, most of the IELTS test givers confront a major stumbling block in writing regarding the completion of both tasks: Task 1 & Task 2 (an essay & a report or letter as per Academic or General) within an hour. The major reason ground behind it is, having lack of strategies. In other words, often after reading the question statement once, they immediately start writing, which leads to inappropriate structure as well as unorganized or unclear ideas. All in all, it becomes a cause of low scoring in IELTS Writing, in spite of having good command in English language. So, in today’s article, we will discuss some strategies to avoid such silly errors and guide you on how to write an essay in IELTS writing task 2:-

First of all you should know that Task 2 is divided into 4 or 5 paragraphs:

  1. Introduction
  2. Body paragraph 1
  3. Body paragraph 2
  4. Conclusion

Now it’s the turn to know what you should do on getting the statement

  • Read the question at least 2-3 times
  • Draw three columns: main idea, explain, result
  • Add the main keywords of above three columns
  • Re-check your planning in order to avoid any kind of repetition or contradiction of content.

If we talk about introduction, it should be simple along with specific information. Just two lines are needed here: paraphrasing, in which question is re-written either by altering keywords or sentence formation means from active to passive or any other complex structure such as in spite of, despite, gerund with collocation and so on & the second sentence is thesis statement, which represents the purpose of writing the essay as per demand of essay.

  • Sometimes, applicants add a background statement in the starting of essay that is optional. It completely depends upon your thoughts whether you are able to think it in an appropriate manner or not: otherwise you can skip it. No need to spend extra time on it.
  •  Make sure, it should take only 2-3 minutes are required to write.

Body paragraph 1& 2-
Each point should contain only 5-6 sentences in body paragraphs. For example, if we talk about “Agree or Disagree” question type, we attempt this essay one side either agree or disagree. In this case, only 2 ideas are enough: first idea in BP1 and second idea in BP2. Now, how to organize:-

  1. First sentence – it can be written to introduce the reader that we are starting to write to justify the question, termed as signposting. Like,

Commencing with prominent aspects to be agreed.

Or

Commencing with prominent aspects that why education should be free?

  • Main idea– it can be a simple sentence or 3-4 keywords.
  • Explanation – after giving main idea, explain your main idea within 2-3 sentences. Most of the times, it is appropriate to use conditional structures in this part, but not all the times. You can use if then or when then or simple passive sentences to clarify your idea.
  •  Example – two types of examples can be added in essay to support our ideas in order to make it clearer, real life examples or survey/ report. It should be accurate as per topic and content. Don’t use remembering words; it can put nefarious effect on your scoring.
  • Result– sum up your idea by concluding the whole information. It is also considered the effect of the explanation.

Conclusion – in this section, only one sentence is needed to summarize the whole essay, so just clarify your opinion (if it is needed as per question type) and add the main ideas, which are mentioned in BP1 & BP2. Be sure, no need to add any new information in Conclusion.
