HOW TO WRITE IELTS WRITING TASK 1

In academic IELTS writing task 1 is report writing in which you have to write about bar graph, pie chart or line graph. In writing task the minimum word limit is if 150 words in which you have to describe each and every thing. To do so you have to put the things in a proper way and flow even your content should be properly structured so today we will discuss how to write IELTS writing task 1.

The introduction

Introduction is the first passage of the IELTS writing Task 1, in this part there are a number of points you need to consider. First, thing is that by the introduction the examiner should know that you have the clear picture of the topic on which you are writing about, but this needs to be short. An introduction should be only one or two sentences long, and is should be a simple summary of the information you are writing your report about. The reason to keep your introduction short and only giving a basic overview is that you can describe the trends or main points in your body paragraphs and you will need a closing sentence in your essay.

Another thing is that you should use synonyms for the words in the title where possible. If you copy the question title, than you will not be able to show your ability to use your own vocabulary to the examiner. The third point is that you should not give opinions and should transfer information. Remember that for Task 1, your aim is only to transfer information from what you see on the exam paper. The last thing is that you should use academic vocabulary and sentence structures.

The body paragraphs

After introduction comes the body paragraph in this the first point is to look is the tense you use when writing. If a time scale is given, you need to match your tenses accordingly. However, if no time scale is given, than you can go with your choice of going with either the present tense or the past tense. Another guideline is that you should count your words after finishing each paragraph. By this exercise you will come to know that whether you are on target for the word limit or if you need to extend or reduce your sentences you can do in between and if you found that you are getting short of the words there will be no way left.

In IELTS writing task you are judged for your ability to present accurate grammar and a range of sentence structures.  Beside, you need to demonstrate a range of vocabulary as this is also one of the parameters. So use a range of vocabulary and avoiding repetition where possible. The last thing you should keep in mind is that you should present your ideas in clear paragraphs.

The closing statement

In the last f a Task 1 Academic report comes the closing statement; this part plays a crucial part in enhancing your scores as. Here are some points to keep in mind while writing the statement:

1. Somewhere in the report you need to include an overview of the main trends / information being shown.

2. You need to clearly show the examiner that your report is finished to make sure it doesn’t look as though you simply ran out of time.

Examples of good ‘end statements’ for ending a Task 1 Academic report

– ‘To sum up, it can be seen that purchasing were at their highest in 2010 and have fallen since that date’

– ‘Overall, it can be seen that doctors had the longest working hours of all occupations given in the table’.

– ‘This ends the report on the data provided in the chart, which clearly illustrates that studying in Canada and Australia are the least expensive options for international students.’
