Macabre – used to describe something that is very  strange  and  unpleasant because it is connected with death or violence.

Sentence – These drawings of the dead are moving rather than macabre.

Magic – the use of special powers to make things happen that would usually be impossible, such as in stories for children.

Sentence – The wicked old woman charmed the princess with magic words.

Magic Wand – a small stick used by people  who perform  tricks  for entertainment.

Sentence – He waved his magic wand and a rabbit appeared.

Make-Believe – believing or imagining things that appear to be attractive or exciting, but are not real.

Sentence – But he did fly, in his imagination, on make-believe journeys to far-off realms.

Make-Up – coloured substances used on your face to  improve or  change your appearance.

Sentence – Her face was bepainted with excessive make-up.

Mask – a covering for all or part of the face that protects, hides, or decorates the person wearing it.

 Sentence – She whipped the mask off her face.

Masquerade – behaviour that is intended to prevent the truth about something unpleasant or not wanted from becoming known.

Sentence – I was tired of the masquerade myself – it had gone too far without me meaning it.

Mausoleum – a building in which the bodies of dead people are buried

Sentence – After touring the mausoleum, the peasant returns and again asks where he can find Mao alive.

Midnight – twelve o’clock in the middle of the night.

Sentence – Church bells pealed at the stroke of midnight.

Mist – thin fog produced by very small drops of water collecting in the air just above an area of ground or water.

Sentence – Mist was rising, and trees and shrubs began to disappear in a milk-white haze.

Monster – any imaginary frightening creature, especially one that is large and strange.

Sentence – The monster, which is reputed to live in the deep dark water of a Scottish loch.

Moonlit – able to be seen because of the light of the moon.

Sentence – She peered out into the moonlit garden and felt a wave of desperation sweep over her.

Morbid – too interested in unpleasant subjects, especially death.

Sentence –He walked quickly, his head full of morbid thoughts.

Mummy – a dead body that is prevented from decaying by being treated with special substances before being wrapped in cloth.

Sentence – He scared me by telling the story of a mummy.

Mysterious – strange, not known, or not understood.

Sentence – There’s something mysterious going on.

Night – the part of every 24-hour period when it is dark because there is very little light from the sun.

Sentence – A scream broke the silence of the night.

Nightmare – a very upsetting or frightening dream.

Sentence – She woke up in the middle of a ghastly nightmare.

Ninja – a Japanese fighter, especially in the past, who  moves  and  acts  without being seen and usually carries a short sword.

Sentence –  The ninja will get mad and run to the edge.

Ogre – a large frightening character in children’s  stories  who  eats   children.

Sentence – The ogre demanded the annual sacrifice of a young village lass to satisfy his blood lust.

Otherworldly – more closely connected to spiritual things than to the ordinary things of life.

Sentence – In this otherworldly space of time, the surprise could be complete.

Petrify – to frighten someone a lot, especially so that they are unable to move or speak.

 Sentence – I stood petrified as the most enormous dog I’ve ever seen came bounding up to me.

Phantasm – something that is seen or imagined but is not real.

Sentence – Like dream, like phantasm, it is a labyrinth what is occult one by one, make me to find the one way…
