IELTS Listening Format Changes in 2020
From 4th, January IELTS listening test will have the following changes:
1st change in listening test
There will not be any example played in part 1. Usually there was an answer of example for candidates to listen at the very starting of the recording, which helped the candidates to check the volume when they were using headphones.
However this example had now been removed which is the bigger change that candidates need to be ready for, so students will have to be careful from the starting of the recording for answer1.
2nd change in Listening Format
The word “sections” will now be changed to “parts”. It won’t affect the actual test; nevertheless it is beneficial to know. For instance, part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4,
3rd change in Listening Format
The page number references will be removed in latest listening test but there will still be references to question number.
It is not a big change for candidates but is necessary to be aware about it.
For instance, instead of informing candidates to look at the question 1-5 on page xxx, now candidates will be just asked to “look at question 1-5 without a page number.
This would not create problems because there is just one group of questions numbered 1-5 and it will be easy to fine.

- A variety question types are used
- Chosen from the following
- Multiple choice
- Matching
- Plan/map/diagram labeling
- Form/note/table/flow chart/ summary completing
- Sentence completion
(Answering)
Test taker write their answers on the question paper as they listen and at the end of the test are given to 10 minutes to transfer their answers to an answer sheet. Care should be taken while waiting answers on the answer sheet as poor spelling and grammar mistakes are penalised.
