How to do Matching Sentence Endings in IELTS Reading:-

This question type is variation of the Complete Sentence question. The main difference is that in place of choosing words from the text to fill the blanks, you have to choose the completion from the list of phrases given respectively. You are given the first half of a sentence and you have to complete it by choosing from the list of options. There are more options to choose from than there are questions.

How to Recognize Matching Sentence Endings Questions:-

The instructions say to complete the sentences, but there aren’t blanks in the sentences. There is a numbered list of unfinished sentences, followed by a box of phrases with letters.
The instructions say to complete each sentence with the correct ending from the box.

Common Problems:

Using just Logic and Grammar

Using logic rather than using grammar and passage is one of the major problems for many students when they attempt to answer this question. Most of the time, they get biased to match the sentences just using common sense and grammar, they tend to forget that the answer has to be based on the reading text.

Examiner’s Trap

Many students fall into trick of connecting ideas. Examiners give the options in such a way that students tend to answer the questions based on connecting ideas rather than looking at the reading passage. This distraction is a major trap that most of the students cannot get rid off.

Trying to Find Matching Words

Another common problem for many students is targeting a word in the question sentence, and then looking for that exact word in the reading text. If you do this, you might end up with wrong answer. Because in IELTS, most of the time examiners use synonyms and paraphrases in reading texts for the words they use in question sentences.

Step 1:

Read the instructions carefully.

Step 2:

Preview the sentences to get a hang of what you need.

Step 3:

Preview the phrases to see which of them match easily.

Step 4:

Now, look at the first sentence. Decide what key ideas/information you will need to complete the first blank.

Step 5:

Identify the appropriate paragraph or section.

Step 6:

Read the specific information more carefully and decide on the best word or words to fill the blank.

Step 7:

Now, go back to the list of phrases to make the match.

Step 8:

Note, however, that the phrases follow up particular order.

Step 9:

If you find it difficult to fill the first blank, go to the next and then the next. Perhaps that will make it easier for you to fill the first blank letter.
