IELTS Reading Test Tips

Today we will look at some IELTS Reading test tips because I have seen many students who get less scores in this module as a result not only their overall scores suffers but also their future. The things I am going to discuss here are very common and I continuously say to follow them but still it’s not been followed. If you follow the below said tips you will definitely see hike in your IELTS Reading scores. In reading the concern is to manage your time in a proper way that you can complete your task in time. For this you have to enhance your reading speed and use some techniques to do so.

The first tip is to help enhancing your speed.

1. Start your reading module from skimming the text. Skimming goes first and it means a very quick read just to get the general understanding about what the main ideas of the text is. You need to skim article before going to the questions. Firstly read the title of the paragraph carefully then start to read it very quickly. Start to read from the first and last sentence of the paragraph to outline the main characteristics of the text and understand its layout.

2. Anticipate answers – This is the strategy that saves too much time in reading. Anticipation is when you read a question and then try to predict what might be the answer. However, don’t use your previous knowledge on the subject when anticipating an answer. It may be tempting to do so but this may lead you to faulty conclusion so you need to read the questions in chunks and think what exactly you should search for in the text.

3. Learn more about all types of questions and tasks- There is a certain set of questions you might see on your task like true false not given, multiple choice questions ,summary completion and fill in the blanks. It is good for you to learn more about all type of questions so that you don’t feel lost during the test. You must know the clear way of tackling all of them and you don’t waste any time. You should try to work on your weaknesses while your reading test.

4. Don’t rely on keywords – Key words help you build the outline of the passage in your head. You need to understand what is more important and help navigate the main ideas however you will rely see the keywords in the same as the questions. For example, you have the question about the spending habits of middle aged people in London. So you will underline the spending habits, middle aged, London as keywords. If there are the chances that you will not see the same wording in the passage. Most likely, when reading the text you’ll encounter something about the expenditure pattern’s of the adult’s in their 40s and 50s. While the meaning of this sentence can similar to the question but the vocabulary is differ. Therefore, you must be on the lookout for similar main ideas between the text and the question.

5. Don’t Leave anything

This might seem one of the most obvious IELTS reading tips but some people don’t write anything when they don’t able to find the answers and just leave blanks but it’s completely wrong if you don’t know the answer, make sure you attempt every question. You might get lucky and you have nothing to lose. So try to do the guess on the last moments because, in the IELTS exam there will not negative marking of any wrong answer.
