IELTS Speaking Strategies

IELTS Speaking is divided in three parts

  1. Introduction
  2. Cue Card
  3. Follow ups

First part of speaking test is introduction. In this part examiner put some introductory question to you. In this part the examiner will ask you some questions about you like about your hobbies, favorite color, work place or school etc. In this part it is necessary that you should tackle nervousness and build your confidence first. Its okay if you are little bit nervous but you should not show it to the examiner in fact, you should try to boost your confidence before your speaking test starts. In order to build your confidence you should practice for the speaking interview months before your exam. Also arrive to the exam centre an hour before your exam so that you can relax yourself. Also take a couple speaking scripts with you to have a last minute preparation. Rather than boosting your confidence there are some other IELTS Speaking Strategies discussed below which will help you in enhancing your scores.

1. You should use the icebreaker question to build up your confidence. From the very starting when the examiner ask you for your passport and for your name or he asks whether you work or study you should keep in mind to speak in full sentences loud and clear. This tip will help you to really build your confidence.

2. You should reflect your Grammar in introduction questions because these questions are designed to test you on different kinds of grammar structures.

3. Some student use wrong tenses from the beginning of test. If the question in past tense than you should explain your idea in past not in present or future tense.

4. You should not answers by heart or use clichés. There are millions of candidates who take IELTS each year and the majority of them think that there is a magic list of predicted questions and answers to them. They also think learning to those questions only they will score high the same applies to lists of words and phrases. Many of the candidates believe that they will get their target band scores if they start using this vocabulary in every single sentence. You should use your brain to give high approach answer and not the memorized answers. You need to explain your idea by making own grammar structure.

5. Body posture also matter a lot in your speaking test because posture is generally for the way someone stands or sit. You may have a posture that might help people knowing whether you are angry, tense or happy.

Whole a gesture usually takes the involvement of a person’s hand movement to show their sentences or words. For instance, saying hello or goodbyes to somebody are gestures that are comprehensive in nature and you might know in no time that the other person is trying to greet you using such signs.

So during the IELTS speaking test you should show good gesture by:-

Smiling and greeting the examiner

Taking permission for sitting

Saying thanks

However, for the good posture you should

Be relax

Avoid hand movement

Avoid unnecessary body movements like shaking legs or ticking fingers.

Some other things that you should keep in mind

Be formal

Give full answer

Be polite

Maintain good posture

Try to make eye contact

Don’t try to over impress

Thank you 🙂
