IELTS Writing Section preparation tips

In IELTS writing section consists of 2 tasks, first is report writing and second is an essay. These tasks are designed to check your writing skills specifically your way to write a response and how you organize the ideas and use the grammar and vocabulary. It’s hard to crack this part of the IELTS test because of the difficulty level of the test but with proper guidance and preparation it can be cracked so today we will discuss about IELTS Writing Section preparation tips.

Know the IELTS Writing Exam Pattern

IELTS writing part is divided in two parts, and time allowed to complete these tasks is one hour. The first part is called IELTS writing task 1, in this task you will get some graphic or pictorial information which can be in the form of a bar chart, pie chart, table, graph, map, or diagram. On the basis of which you will have to write a report and its minimum word limit will be 150 words. You have to describe about the information depicted in the graph or picture. For this specific task it is recommended that you should devote no more than 20 minutes.

The task 2 is more demanding and complicated even it carries more sores. In this task you have to write an essay on the topic given and the length of the content should not be less than 250 words. You are expected to organize your answer clearly, giving some examples to support your points in 40 minutes.

Score calculation criteria for both the tasks:

Scores are calculated on the basis of 5 criteria which are given below

  1. Task Achievement
  2. Task Response
  3.  Coherence
  4.  Grammatical Range and Accuracy
  5. Lexical Resource.

IELTS Writing Task 2 has more weightage than the Writing Task 1 and its almost double than task 1. Your scores are calculated according to the scores you get in both the tasks for example, if you scored a band score of 7 for Writing task 1 and 6 for Writing task 2, your overall score will be calculated as 7+6+6= 19/3 = 6.33 which means your score of task 2 will be calculated twice. 

Preparation Tips for IELTS Writing Section

– The students should start preparing for the IELTS very early as it is not that easy test that can be cracked with just the preparation of 2-3 weeks. This is a fact and the students who are quite good in English should also follow this and start preparing well in time. The test is difficult even for the students whose mother tongue is English.

– The average time required for preparing IELTS is at least 6 months.

 – Practice on daily basis pick a writing topic for both tasks 1 and 2 and try to write on them. Your practice session should be time bounded and you should try to complete the task in one hour.

– Grammar and vocabulary are the main influencing factors in writing. Then comes the ideas that should be in a structured form and in a logical manner. After that is structured thinking so that your ideas can be conveyed in a logical manner. To get good scores you should concentrate on learning new vocabulary and enhancing your grammatical skills.

– You should enhance your ideas as you can encounter any topic in the exam. The best way out to get some new ideas is to read a lot. You should read newspapers, magazines and books as this will not only increase your vocabulary but also give you some new ideas.
