Importance of Cohesion and coherence in IELTS Writing Task 2

IELTS Writing task 2 is very important as it have more marks than task 1. If you want to score 7+ in writing it is mandatory to accomplish this task affectively. For this cohesion and coherence is very important so let’s see the Importance of Cohesion and coherence in IELTS Writing Task 2

Cohesion and coherence – It is the most important factor that helps to get good scores.  Coherence refers to the organization of the content into separate body paragraphs as per need, while if we talk about coherence, it represents the linking of the information. Let’s clear it with an example: –

If the question statement is about Advantages and Disadvantages then there is need to describe the main data in two separate body paragraphs (Introduction and conclusion will be same as we write), Body paragraph 1 for Merits, and Demerits in Body Paragraph 2. Definitely unclear pattern will affect our band scoring adversely.

If we talk about the question type “Advantages Outweigh the Disadvantages” OR: To what extent do you agree or disagree, where usually we give three ideas: 2 ideas for one side and 1 idea for opposite side then it is more fruitful to divide the content into three body paragraphs by using appropriate linking words for clear presentation.

Body paragraph 1 – Commencing with prominent aspects to be agreed.

Body paragraph 2 – In addition to it / Moreover or any other connector

Body paragraph 3- On the other hand,

The usage of connectors should be appropriate: –

1. For combining multiple bits of information – and, as well as, along with, plus, over and above, not only but also ( all the connectors are simply replaced by and with the exclusion of not only but also such as, internet saves time and efforts = internet saves time plus efforts = internet saves time over and above efforts, while in case of not only but also, it is used as it saves not only time but also efforts.

2. For Comparison – However, While, whilst, nevertheless, nonetheless, whereas (usually students use BUT for contradiction, which is inappropriate, as it is considered as informal, so try to avoid it )

3. For adding similar ideas – In addition to it, Furthermore, apart from it, Moreover, Besides, beside this, equally relevant to this, another idea is, Another cogent to bolster this.

4. For Contrasting information –On the other hand, on contrary, In contrast, On the paradoxical side, Although Yet, Albeit, Albeit.

5. For representing Results – As a result, Hence, Henceforth, Eventually, Consequently, Thence, Therefore, Thus, Thereby, that is why, Ergo, as a consequence(“SO” is also used by students, but need to avoid, since it is also an informal word, you can use it in Speaking but not in writing.

6. For providing Explanation- whenever you want to explain your ideas to make it clearer then you can use due to, because of, owing to, by dint of, by virtue of, as, since.

7. For giving examples or evidences- as either real life or surveys or reports are added in the Task 2 to justify the ideas in a suitable manner. For that you can use good signposting words like, for example, for instance, to cite an illustration, to expound paradigm, to epitome, to exemplify.

8. For sequencing – whenever we want to add more than one idea in our essay then you can use first of all or firstly or first and foremost (First tenable etiology, which is one of the strong Vocab words, can be used while representing any reason not for advantages), Secondly, another idea is or secondly. Thirdly.

9. For Conclusion – To conclude or in conclusion or in compendium, having elucidated all of concerned factors or to summarize.

These are very connectors that can be utilized to generate a good linking in our ideas, which automatically ameliorate our COHERENCE AND COHEREMCE parameter that is prominent. For acquiring 6 or 6.5, connectors are perfect: However, to obtain 7 or more than 7.0, some uncommon connectors must be used by the applicants, that you can easily find out from this article.
