Important IELTS Writing Task & Speaking, 21th April
Academic Writing Task 1:-
The chart below gives data about the popularity (% of people doing regularly) of various sports in different countries. The graph shows the amount of time that people in those countries spend reading books, newspapers or Internet articles per day. There is also a table showing the average price of books.
Write a report summarising the information. Select and describe the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Sample Answer:-
The charts show information for 4 countries regarding the popularity of certain sports, time spent reading and the average price of books.
In terms of the sports, we see that country A, C and D are in most respects quite similar. In each of these countries, regular participation in tennis, swimming and running is around the 10% mark. Country D is somewhat different because its popularity of gym use is about two and a half times higher than the other countries, at 25%. This is the highest level of popularity in the data shown.
Nation B is a noticeable exception in most respects. Although its popularity of gym use (10%) is similar to countries A and C, in other sports it has a much higher level of participation. It has tennis at about 18%, swimming at around 21%, and its figure for running (about 23%) is the second highest here.
Turning to time spent reading, countries A, C and D are very similar at around 55 minutes, while B is less than half of this at 20 minutes. However, there is no real difference in book prices between the countries, where 7 euros is roughly the norm in each.
Overall, country B’s higher participation in sport may be reflected in lower reading times, but the price of books appears not to follow this pattern.

Your local museum has asked for feedback on your recent visit. Write to the museum. In your letter

Sample Answer:
Dear Mr. Johnson,
I have been asked by your office to write to you regarding your museum with some points of view about my recent visit.
I would like to say first of all that I think you have done an excellent job modernizing the place, and I have recommend it as a day trip to a number of friends. The layout of the building is bright and inviting, and the items you have on display are well laid out.
However, I do feel that some of the exhibits could have been more clearly labeled, with some additional details about where they were discovered and what they would have been used for. Some of the displays my son and I were looking at were a little confusing. I would also be very interested to see artifacts that may be available from other cultures. I am particularly interested in Egyptian history, for example, and would certainly come again if there were any displays like that.

Many countries today are experiencing high levels of migration from rural areas to cities. What are the causes of this trend, and what effects does it have on the existing city dwellers?
Give reasons for your answer, and provide ideas and examples from your own experience.
Sample Answer:-
Migration from the countryside to cities is certainly a topical issue, as so many nations are this pattern today. There are three main causes, and two key impacts, which I will outline now.
The main cause is probably the lack of employment available to rural people. Rural industries, ranging from agriculture to food production and animal breeding, have all been rationalized and made far more efficient in recent years, meaning that fewer people are needed to staff them. Furthermore, the growth of employment opportunities in the cities means that people, especially youngsters, are tempted to move there by higher wages and the prospect of reliable work.
Finally, many countries still have a weaker infrastructure in rural areas, especially in terms of transport and economic activity. For example, if a country dweller is unable to find public transport to get to work locally, that person will inevitably consider moving to a city where the infrastructure is far better established.
Regarding the effects felt by the urban residents, perhaps the main impact is on accommodation. An increased urban population drives up the cost of buying or renting a home, leading to possible hardship for people who had assumed that prices would remain stable. We can see this clearly in major conurbations such as London, Sao Paolo or Delhi, where property prices are extremely high and continue to rise. The other main effect on the existing city population is the vastly increased competition for job opportunities, especially at a less skilled level. For instance, drivers, shop workers and hospitality staff find themselves competing for work with new arrivals who are often prepared to work for less. This can lead to a reduction in wages and consequent decline in standard of living, especially when combined with the increased cost of housing.
To sum up, the causes of this trend are primarily to do with employment, and the effects are felt in terms of wages and accommodation.

Do you work or study?
I am a student at the moment. I am studying Executive Master of Business Administration. I used to work as an operation manager for Future Group Limited in India.
Which magazines and newspapers do you read [Why?]
I read Times of India, India Today magazine, daily newspaper that specializes in economics and business issues, and related social and political aspects. Why do I read them? It’s simple. Being a complete human being makes a person more effective and marketable in business and management.
What kinds of articles are you most interested in? (Why?)
I mostly like to keep myself in regards to the economics and business. Other than that I like to learn about what is happening at the sports front.
Are people in your country interested in reading newspaper or magazines?
Most people in my country start their day with the newspaper over a cup of tea or coffee and one likes to be well informed of things happening around them.

Describe an activity that you do in your school after school

BAND 8.0 SAMPLE ANSWER:
An activity that I like to do in my school after finishing school is playing badminton which I started to do since I was in 6th grade.
It is actually a badminton class, so we have teachers and other students too. We practice badminton here for an hour. Sometimes, we even stay there for another half an hour. Just like tennis, you can play badminton as a singles match or doubles match. The rules are pretty much the same as tennis. The only difference is that the badminton shuttlecock is lighter than the tennis ball, thus, it requires less strength.
Due to my short-sightedness, I am not very good at playing this game but I enjoy it anyway. Firstly, it helps keep me fit. In addition, I can train my eyes to look further and faster, and it quickens my reflexes. Last but not least, it helps me a lot in improving my teamwork skills.

What kinds of games do children play these days?
Children mostly play electronic games these days. They hardly play outdoors. They play games which are technology oriented. In fact , computer gaming has become a major addiction among today’s children and teenagers.
Why do people play different kind of games when they grow up?
First reason is that they become more mature and they are able to understand more complex games. Secondly, they outgrow certain games, they find them boring or too simple sometimes. Lastly, they are also limited by the time available. I remember I used to love playing monopoly when I was young but today I don’t have the time to play it.
Do you think winning is the most important goal for playing games?
Winning is definitely important but I believe there are so many other purposes of games. They teach us cooperation, competition, how to accept a loss. Playing games also enhance our imagination, they make us think outside the box.
Do parents in your country encourage children to play games?
No, most parents encourage children to study and not play. It’s mainly because of competitions, children need to score higher and higher to get into colleges and to clear entrance exams. Thus parents mainly tell their children to study and to focus on exams.
What kind of games do children play at school?
During my school days , we used to play games like hide and seek, chess , carrom board and so on. Then we also invented certain games like statue a game in which we had to freeze all moments when the other person said statue. I am not sure, what new games children play nowadays but I am pretty sure the old games like hide and seek are still popular.
