Important Steps to increase your IELTS Writing Task 2 score

IELTS Writing can be made easy and you can score well specially in Task 2 if you follow some important steps to increase your IELTS Writing Task 2. Let’s discuss them –

You need to read the statement carefully to get an idea about on what aspect of the topic you have to express your views on. Once the main idea is clear than you can write a relevant answer. To illustrate- 

The topic is Keeping Pets. In this task you should focus your discussion on the following points-

– Types of Pets

– Where the pets are kept

– How cruel this is

These three topics will be the main discussion points. In the first point leys talk about different types of living creatures like dogs, cats, birds etc.. Secondly, where the pets have been kept which can be a small apartment. In the last point you need to give a clear point view and support you answer.

You should have a clear and impressive point of view on the topic. An example of clear point of view is:

It is cruel to keep pets in small apartments if the pets are of large size. They won’t get much place to move around and eventually it will lead to unhealthy lifestyle and depression. As you can clearly see that the statement is justifying the view point.  

On the other hand if we say, sometimes it’s cruel to keep pets in apartment but sometimes it is not cruel. The examiner will not get a clear message from these lines and examiner will feel that you are confused and unclear about your own views.

To support our point we need to make statements supporting our views. For example – If any large pet is kept in small apartment as lack of exercise his energy won’t be able to utilize fully and eventually the pet will get frustrated and it further even lead to medical issues which are linked to lack of exercise such as obese which may shorten the pet’s life. Express relationship between the content as they from one sentence to another. This also helps the assessor to connect with the point of view that is developing.

Organize your essay: Make sure to leave a line between two paragraphs so that the examiner can easily the way your essay is organized.

Tips for scoring high in IELTS Writing Task 2:

1. Don’t make general statements as it doesn’t reflect a mature viewpoint.  To illustrate-

All dogs like people. This is a simple statement by this the viewpoint of the author is expressed properly .

To go for more complex sentence which reflects more grammatical range –

Most dogs are sociable seems to enjoy human companionship.

In the above said sentence the idea is more elaborated.

2. Avoid using idioms or sayings

When you are stating a point in an essay don’t use idioms like every coin has two sides or Every cloud has a silver lining.

3. Avoid using clichés as they show too much informality. Example – with most pets, what you see is what you get.
