In the IELTS exam you are given instructions before every type of question and it is supposed that you should write the answers according them. Some of the students feel that reading instructions every time is just the wastage of time so they skip them but remember this method of saving time will cost you with deduction of scores. Importance of instructions in IELTS Listening
In IELTS listening exam, you are given instruction as ONE WORD ONLY, NOT MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER, NOT MORE THAN THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER, Choose an option or Choose two options etc. According to the instruction, you need to write your answer. Now the instruction in which many aspirants get confused is NOT MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER here what you can do is write a one word or two words or a number

Reading Instructions in IELTS Reading
All the above instructions are applicable for IELTS reading questions as well. In reading module the most test takers get confused in TRUE FALSE NOT GIVEN and YES NO NOT GIVEN so for this you should be alert and write according to the instructions as if you write TRUE FALSE NOT GIVEN instead of YES NO NOT GIVEN or vice versa your score will be deducted. Some time you are said to answer in code T, F, NG in place of TRUE FALSE NOT GIVEN for all these things it’s your alertness and presence of mind which can save you. So it is recommended to underline the instructions as to get them in a glance.
Reading Instructions in IELTS Writing
Reading instructions on writing is equally important as the word limit is given in them it is obvious that you have to write 150 words in task 1 and 250 in task 2 but sometimes in the rush and pressure these limits can skip from your mind and if you write less than these limits your score will be deducted. So here also you should read instructions and underline them.
