Introduction in IELTS Speaking

Introducing yourself in a proper and impressive way is very important in IELTS speaking as it has to be done in the beginning of the test and examiner judges your speaking skills and knowledge of language in this section.

The introduction should be balanced; the information included in it should neither be too specific nor too general. The language style should be neutral neither formal nor informal for example you can say-

“Hello, my name is ABC and I am from India. I work as an Accountant in a private firm who deals in plumbing material and I am working there from last six years.

In my family I have my parents, my wife and two children. I like to play cricket, basketball in my leisure time.

This can be your introduction for exam and you can make changes where it is required.

Don’t’s while Introducing Yourself in IELTS

Now we will discuss some points that you should avoid doing while introducing yourself in IELTS speaking test.

1. Answer what the examiner asks from you don’t give additional information especially in introductory part of the test. For example – if the examiner asks your name just tell him your name. Don’t try to act smart by expanding your answer by telling the meaning of your name. Students are normally told by their mentors to expand their answer which is good and necessary for speaking test but it is not essential for the introductory part of the test.

 2. Don’t be friendly or use informal language with the examiner. Use only formal language and phrases like ‘g’day mate’, ‘Hey-up fella,’, ‘How’s it going dude’, should be avoided.

3. Don’t try to insert words forcefully. Many students try to insert heavy vocabulary they learned without knowing their proper meaning and where it can be used. Using of inappropriate words can become the reason to deduct your marks.

Make a good first impression this cannot be done only with impressive speaking but your body language also plays a vital role in this. It is true that your language skills are judged in the exam but displaying good body language give positive wipes to the examiner. As the intro is the first part of the test so you should create your impression in this section.

For good gesture and posture you should sit slightly forward in your chair, do not bend over the table, keep your head up instead of looking here and there or staring down at the table, make eye contact with the examiner and always carry a smile on your face.

As it is commonly said that “smile is the curve that sets everything straight” this is true with IETS exam also. Your smiling face reflects that you are confident and relaxed and it creates positive impression on examiner’s mind that you have a good knowledge of language.

What comes After The IELTS Speaking Introduction?
