Mistakes to avoid in IELTS Reading

The key to success in IELTS Reading is considered to be constant practice and time management and there is no doubt that without these you cannot score 8 in Reading. There are some students who do regular practice and manage their time well but they don’t able to score well in IELTS Reading. The thing to think here is what the huddle which they cannot see is or what exactly they are doing wrong because of which they don’t score. The reality is they commit some mistakes which stop them to get the scores so, today in this article we will discuss about the mistakes to avoid in IELTS Reading.

1. Spelling Mistakes

A major reason because of which students lose scores is the mistakes in spellings. Often students copy the wrong spellings in hurry as a result examiner mark it wrong.  There are many words like “neighbor” in which a word is sort of silent and if we write it as “neighbor” it seems to be right and this is the mistake that students do. So you should be very careful while coping the answer to the answer sheet as if you missed a single letter your answer will be considered wrong.

2. Spending much time on single question

The time is divided in a very fair manner i.e. you should devote 20 minutes to each passage which means you get 1.5 minute to solve one question and you should take 1 minute to search and write an answer. Sometimes the statement is very complicated and it takes long time to search the answer in this situation you should leave the answer and move to the other one because it is not a wise decision to waste much time on a question. If you spent much time on one then the possibility of leaving several question unanswered will raise.

So, leave the question and mark it so that you can come to it at the end of the test if you have some time in your hand or just make a guess and write the answer but never leave any question unanswered.

3. Selection of headings in matching headings

The question type in which most students lose their scores is the Matching Headings to Paragraphs. This type is quite confusing and students often randomly select the headings or choose them without reading the whole passage. The correct approach to this question type is to first read the whole paragraphs and then decide the headings.

4. Improper time management

Time management is very necessary for getting a good score in IELTS Reading. Many individuals lose their scores because they spend too much time in reading and understanding each and every word in the passage and they forget about the time limits. This wastage of time lead them to the unfinished task in which they have to leave some questions unanswered. You should manage your time in a proper way it is suggested that you should give 20 minutes to each passage as you will be given 60 minutes to solve 3 passages in which 40 questions are there.

5. Your answer makes a sense

Another mistake that occur is that students skim and scan to locate the answer and simply write it down without seeing the sense of the question. You should match the word that you chose with the statement so that it makes a sense.

Example:

China made a huge ……… in urban construction.

The person found, in his opinion, two potentially correct answers – sky scraper and progress .

Will the phrase make sense with the sky scraper answer ?

China made a huge sky scraper in urban construction.

There will be no meaning.

So let’s try the second word.

China made a huge progress in urban construction.

Meaning appeared. Hooray!

Thank You 🙂
