Repeating words and phrases again and again is very common and big problem for IELTS aspirants in IELTS Speaking test. Repetition is such a major issue that if you are using heavy and impressive vocabulary but keep saying them frequently, your score cannot go above band 6 in the IELTS Speaking section. So it is very essential to improve your vocabulary to get high scores.  It is a common question of every IELTS aspirant that how can I improve my vocabulary? Today in this segment we will tell you 4 tips that will help you to avoid repetition.

Tips to eliminate repetition of words

Tip1. During practice record your speaking sessions. If you have the recording of how you speak, you can listen it and find out the points where you are lacking specifically, repetition of the vocabulary and how often you do it. When you hear words which you repeat note them down and try to locate their synonyms.

Tip #2. Try paraphrasing the sentences using synonyms. Synonyms are the words that have the same or nearly the same meaning. In the English language there are ample of synonyms  which can be used. For example:

Amazing – Incredible, Fantastic, Fabulous, Astonishing, Extraordinary.

Big – Huge, Enormous, Gigantic, Humongous, Substantial, Mammoth.

Dull – Boring, Uninteresting, Monotonous, Humdrum, Dreary.

Good – Excellent, Fine, Wonderful, Superior, Gracious, Superb, Splendid, Genuine, Sterling, Top-notch.

Using synonyms make your conversation impressive. Although, using synonyms take much efforts but it increase the score. There are certain things that you should avoid during exam.

How can I enhance my vocabulary-?

► Read books, newspaper and magazines and try to locate new words from them and when you come across any new word note it down and find its meaning in dictionary and if you know a simple synonym to it, write it down. Keep your vocabulary organized.

► We also need to use synonyms when writing. They make the reading material interesting and the reader remain engaged. I you will use same word again and again then your listener or reader will get bored.

Tip #3. Use Pronouns whenever you talk about something that you mentioned couple of minutes ago. Usually used pronouns are (e.g. it, they, these, those, he, she etc.). This will help you to avoid repeating same words. Sometimes it is the simplest and affective way to avoid repetition, especially if you cannot find synonyms for the word. Don’t be shy– try to be talkative and speak as much as you can. Try to talk as you have conversation with your friend, and you don’t ever run out of things to say. Try to speak quite simply but fluently and avoid pauses. Once you start hesitating and pausing, look for complex words and grammar to impress an examiner as this will show him your grip on grammar and vocabulary.

Tip #4. Use various forms of the words. There are many different forms of the words in English like nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. When learning the new vocabulary, look for them as well. For example: beauty (noun) – beautify (verb) – beautiful (adjective) – beautifully (adverb). Look how we can use these in the sentences:

This is an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Local citizens have raised money to beautify the area.

This is an area with breathtakingly beautiful scenery.

We are staying in a beautifully designed and peaceful area.
