I didn’t score well in this attempt! Should I retake IELTS exam?

There are many students who don’t crack IELTS in the first attempt or don’t get satisfied with their band scores and the only thing that comes in their mind is I didn’t score well in this attempt! Should I retake IELTS exam? And have many questions in their mind which sometimes act as a huddle to resit the exam. Today we will discuss some of the FAQs about reappearing in the IELTS exam.

IELTS Policies on reappearing for the Exam

First let us see what IELTS agencies IDP or British Council says about reappearing in the exam. These organizations allow the candidate to retake the test for an unlimited time and without any specific waiting time. As you know there are 4 tests conducted in a month and if a candidate wants to give the second exam on the next week he can do this if the date is vacant for that day and the registration process remains the same.

Fees for reappearing in IELTS

Many aspirants think there will be a discount for the second or third attempt in IELTS here is bad news for them that neither British Council nor IDP gives any discount for resitting in the exam and one have to pay the full fees.

If I take the IELTS twice, Can I still use my 1st attempt result?

Another frequent asked question is will my previous score affect my new one? Many candidates think that if my scores in the second attempt get lower than the first attempt which scores will be valid new or the old. Well in this case both the scores are valid as the IELTS scores are valid for two years and every certificate you get is valid for the same period. However, there are a few organizations who gives more score validity. Applicants for General Skilled Migration (GSM) visas to Australia, for example, enjoy a validity period of three years. Students retaking the exam because of expired scores will probably have to spend some time reacquiring IELTS skills, even if they have good communication skills. Although IELTS exercises attempt to imitate academic and everyday situations, receiving high IELTS scores nonetheless requires a unique skill set that must be practiced and refined

Can I retake in one module only?

There is no provision of giving retest of only one module as many things that if I scored less in writing I can go only for writing test but unfortunately if you score less even in  one module you have to appear for all four modules.

Can results of two tests be merged?

This is the question many test takers wants to be true but this cannot be done as the scores of one exam neither be carried to the other exam nor be carried to one another module. As if you score 7 in reading and 5.5 in writing and if you want that .5 from reading should be transferred writing module it is not possible.

Multiple Retakes for the IELTS

Many aspirants give multiple retakes for the IELTS without proper preparation in order to enhance the score as they think that giving profit to the organization by reappearing in the exam again and again will boost their scores. This is not a proper approach as the checking criteria of the exam are very fair and reattempting will not affect your scores. In fact, practice will make you help enhancing your scores and the way to prepare is practice tests.  So when you are properly prepared for the exam than only book it.
