3 STRATIGIES FOR TABLE COMPLETION IN IELTS Reading

During your IELTS preparation for the Reading module, you’ll need to practise about 11-12 types of the questions. In this post we will specifically discuss the table type to solve with different tips and tricks.

IELTS Reading Table Completion Question Introduction:

However, you will be facing this table in the form of blank blocks to be filled in. This is basically presented as an incomplete table of information, which is either summaries or paraphrases provided in the reading text. You have to locate the particular information in the passage from that you need to choose appropriate words, and acknowledge the details of the text.

You will be provided with instructions as to how many words you can use for the completion. Given directions will help you to specify how many words you can use. For example, you may see the following options: NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER, ONE WORD ONLY, or NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS.

Sometimes it’s given like that, you will be provided a word bank to fill the various gaps in the table and in this case, options in the word bank are given more than the questions asked. Few students think that it’s somewhere it’s easy to find the correct answers from the word bank. Although it’s somewhere, it is an easy path, but do keep in mind a “trick” for this section. You should put an exact word from the passage in the word bank, which is actually the incorrect one for the answer.

However, the accurate answers will be given as synonyms in the passage rather than the exact words. Don’t ever make an assumption that there will be the answer with an exact word in the passage as in the questions.

How to respond regarding table completion?

To answer this, the two steps need to be followed as the priority while doing the  preparation of the reading passage. The last step to be followed is itself with the reading passage.

1. Examine The Table and Underline

Key Words – It’s a great idea to look at the table carefully and know the best idea to read it. Maybe the best idea is to go from right to left, along with this look for the headings (if they are given). This will help you to get to know about the information in the passage and the theme of the text. Underlining doesn’t play that important role as you are provided with the notes in Table Completion, which are mostly brief summaries already.

2. Note Grammar

When you understand the theme of the paragraph, you will come to know about the parts of the given speech in the table. Further, you should think of the part of the speech which could fit the particular blank. It can be noun, adverb, adjective, verb. You should go with making the brief notes as you will lose your scores if your spelling or grammar of the words are incorrect.

3. Scanning of the Passage

In reading, scanning is very prominent as it helps in getting the crux of the passage. Moreover, while doing the scanning process, one can find out suitable keywords for finding the suitable answers to the table. It is very integral to focus on synonyms rather than looking for similar words. Start scanning the information that seems to be important.
