SAMPLE ESSAY

Some people believe that a minimum qualification should be fixed for right to Vote. Do you agree or disagree?

SAMPLE ANSWER

Some people are of the opinion that in a democracy, everybody should not be given the right to vote. They believe that right to vote should be granted only to the people who possess a minimum educational qualification. I do not agree with such people. I firmly reject the idea of fixing minimum educational qualification as the criterion for voting right.

First point to support my point is that democracy is rightly described as the government of the people, for the people, by the people. If we fix a minimum educational qualification for voters, that would mean striking off a large number from the voting lists. A big majority of people will be disqualified from electing their governments. Democracy would no more be a popular government. It will be reduces to a government by the minority. The very aim of setting up a government by the popular mandate will be defeated.

Another reason to support the notion is minimum educational qualifications should not be fixed for suffrage for another reason also. Those who advocated the qualification tag, do so because they believe that those lacking educational standards have no wisdom to cast their vote. They believe that only the educated people possess political awakening. But that is far from the truth. In fact, those below the qualification level are often more practical. They possess more knowledge about the credentials of different political parties and their candidates. They often exhibit more wisdom than the qualified ones in electing their rulers.

To sum up, the present system of universal adult franchise is the best. Adulthood is the age where voters have the maturity to cast their vote rightly. Educational qualification has hardly anything to do with it.
