The test takers usually face the problem of spelling errors as it is pretty challenging to remember long spellings and different pronunciation. Spelling is considered an imperative part of lexical Resources since it enables the examiner to assess the proficiency of a non native user in English language writing skill. Excessive errors will definitely impact your writing band score in reading, writing as well as listening. There are many words in English language which are of confusing spellings but student can learn from them to avoid repetition further in exam.

Common mistakes

All the four module must be attempted by the test taker accurately in vocabulary and spellings. The candidates who make mistakes of spelling in IELTS end up scoring below expectation scores. As it is an assessment criteria for judging student’s efficiency in the language, chief emphasis is laid on both these. If a student wants to deliver his accurate write up, he must know the errors that he can do unintentionally in future.

1. Single/double letter words

These words are witnessed usually written wrong in IELTS writing and listening modules. It becomes a perplexing situation for the candidate to decide that whether he should put that particular letter once or twice. Some common words exist where this confusion arises such as ’embarasment’ which is wrong as the correct spellings are ’embarrassment’.

2. Words with silent letter

It is known to everyone that in English language many words are pronounced with silent letters but while writing it is needed to be written. For example, handkerchief, in this word ‘d’ is silent while pronouncing and is called hankerchief. Other examples include words like autumn, column, government and environment etcerera.

3. Words with I, e together

In English language many words are there where e and i come together in a word and it always becomes confusing that what to write first i or e. In some words i is written before e and in other words vice versa is the situation. Such as chief, believe, receive etcetera

4. Words with letters er/or

Here some words are seen ending with either ‘er’ or ‘or’ such as doctor and gather. Sounds are same but spelling vary. So be cautious while writing word like traveler as it should not be travellor. These words usually appear in listening test and deducts are score.

5. Writing the way you speak

As we are non native speakers, we might pick some words from our native language or lingua franca. Also we pronounce them incorrectly and may be with wrong accent. For spellings accent matter a lot as for an example in case of word’ modren’ which is incorrect to write as right spellings arw modern. It is commonly seen among students that they pronounce these words in their way and write in the same manner.

6. Doubling letters

Some students write some letters twice by mistake such as oppinion rather than opinion. Also they miss some consonants when are needed like disappointment, tomorrow, recommend etcetera.

7. Writing properly wrong word with different meaning

There are homonyms in English which sounds same but have different meanings such as loose/lose , perspective/prospective and their/there.

8. Vowel errors

Sometimes student use incorrect vowel like writing tirtiary in place of tertiary.

9. Confusion between c and s

C and s sometimes give same sound while pronouncing a word so here student gets confused while writing too as in case of service, society etc.

10. Change in form changes the word too
