The way one can prepare for IELTS speaking

Many of the IELTS aspirants are confused about how to prepare for all the modules of IELTS. Sometimes this confusion gets so worse that people drop the idea to appear in the exam. So today we will try to sort this problem as in this article we will discuss about the preparation of speaking test.

First of all let’s see what’s exactly is the speaking test-

Speaking test is scheduled before or after the other test. It is an interview session of three parts. In which part one is introduction where the examiner asks some introductory question. Then comes topic question or cue card and at last some question relating to the cue card is asked. All this exercise goes for 10-15 minutes.

A. Part 1:

As I have told you in this part some introductory questions are asked relating to hobbies, work, education or personality etc. For example-

1. Do you work or study?

2. Where do you live?

3. Which color you like the most?

B. General topics or Cue Card:

Cue card is the part 2 of the speaking session in this you will be given any general topic and 1 minute will be allotted to prepare it and for 2 minutes you have to speak on it. Cue card is considered as the most important part of the performance as the examiner judge your speaking skills through this long continuous speaking.

C.  Speech section

In the last section some question relating to the cue topic are raised and you have to give the answer in 5-6 sentences.

Now, how are bands provided?

There are four parameters by which examiners assign bands to candidates and they are:

A. Fluency & Coherence

B. Lexical Resource

C. Grammatical Range & Accuracy

D. Pronunciation

Now comes the real challenge “Practice”. Here we will discuss some methods to practice and improve your speaking-

In the beginning speak while standing in front of the mirror and observe your gestures and postures. If you feel something wrong or awkward work on it.

Record your sessions and listen it. You yourself can identify many major and minor mistakes by this.

Try to start with some of your familiar topics in which you can be comfortable to speak.

In starting use simple words and don’t go for the heavy vocabulary.

Once you get bit confident start practicing with any partner who is competent in language and can tell you where you are wrong.

In the later stages try to listen speeches, read newspaper, watch television all these things will improve your pronunciation and vocabulary.

In speaking pronunciation is very important so work on it.

The most important thing is practice a lot.

That’s all for today

Keep Practicing
