3 things to keep in mind for IELTS listening test

Majority of the candidates find the Listening test more challenging than the Reading test. This is because when you are reading, you have the reading texts in front of you and you can check them more than once. However, when you are listening, in case you missed your answer, you are not able to listen it again and can never get it back, it’s gone. Thus, you just need to work out some strategies in advance to easy and score well in your test. Here are the 3 things to keep in mind for IELTS listening test.

 1. Make NOTES as you listen

Imagine that you are listening for the answer to Question 6, you suddenly hear the answer to Question 7. This means you have been concentrating very hard on one question that you have missed not only that one, but two more!

The only one method to avoid this is to prepare notes on the question paper as you listen. Don’t worry if your notes are unorganized; the significant thing is not to get left behind. Eventually, you have 10 minutes for transferring your answers to the answer sheet at the end of the test (at which time you require to be neat and clean). The key to do well in the Listening test is to make it a two step process. First listen and make notes, then transfer your answers to the answer sheet.

2. BE ACCURATE

In the Listening test, you need to be very careful when answering the question. For instance, let’s say the question paper asks you to complete the phrase ‘in the’…..’ and the answer is ‘morning’. When you write the information on the answer sheet, only ‘morning’ will be marked correct. If you write ‘The morning’ or ‘in the morning’ you will not be given a point (despite the fact that you know the answer). This rule is also applicable to Spelling. Make sure that you do not commit any silly mistakes as usually done by many students.

3. GUESS, if you are in DOUBT.

If you are unsure of the answer, it’s important to guess. There are the two main reasons if this: _

_ You don’t lose points for having the wrong answer, so there is no risk.

_Leaving spaces can get you into problems as you may write an accurate answer in the wrong place later.

Finally, be ensure that the test day is not the first time you do an IELTS Listening test.  Try to practice at least 4_5 tests in advance to get used for the preparation and the test time, reading and listening to the questions, and writing accurate answers.

Some Preparation Tips

  1. There are several preparation tips for getting good score in IELTS listening. The best thing to enhance your listening skills is to listen some English speakers. It is a good idea to do this exercise to learn and understand the assent of the native speakers.   You can use internet for this purpose by downloading or subscribing various videos and channels. It can also work as a stress buster and make you feel relaxed by hearing and watching this mode of learning.
  2. Use the time given at the start of each part to quickly read and understand the upcoming questions. This will help you to identify the kind of information you need to listen for.
  3. Information given in the starting of each part gives you the idea about the upcoming content like who is speaking, the situation and the purpose so listen it carefully.
  4. Headings, sub-headings and paraphrasing can be used as clues to know what to listen for and what the answers might be.
  5. Underline key words in the questions. Make sure you read the instructions and keep them in mind to implement the word limit required in answers: one word; a group of words; a letter; true/false etc?
