Tips for improving reading skills for IELTS

To improve your reading score you need to improve your overall English ability. This is something you really need to understand about reading. Doing lots of sample tests will not help you much if you are only testing yourself. This is very common with some people if you are trying to take 20 reading sample tests before your exam because you think that’s the best way to prepare. Then you are wrong. Of course knowing the test is important and it’s useful to know about the types of questions and how you can save the time. But is you want to get more than 7 that are about your English ability not about your test ability. So let’s discuss some tips to improve the reading

1. Reading fast

Here I don’t say about skimming and scanning. I want to say about fast testing. When you first start preparing for the IELTS reading test, then it can be good to take a 2-3 tests. This can help you to learn what your current level is. Also you can time yourself during these tests. If possible mark how much time it takes you to complete each section. In addition to this, Mark any questions that take you a particularly long time when you are doing your sample test. If you think you run into a really difficult questions and it’s taking you a long time then just make a small mark on that question. So that you can go back later and look at this question. What is the difficult about it? And again, analyzing your speed and accuracy on certain question types which can help you where your strengths and weaknesses are.

2. Highlight the important information from the paragraphs

Most likely the question is about the names, dates, years, name of places. And you will be able to locate them in the text very quickly. It is easy for you to find the location if you underline the important words by using pencil.

3. Don’t spend too much time on each question

Some of the questions are difficult and consume more time. But some of them you might be reading and you might think and try again and again to find the answer. Well, the problem is if you spend too much time on a question, so you have 40 question and one hour limit. So how you will find another answers. To solve this, try to read a question and figure out the answer. If you don’t know it you can a star beside this and come back after. But don’t spend too long on questions.

4. Pay attention to the introduction and conclusion

Most of the time the author’s point of view is often expressed in the introduction and conclusion. You can answer most questions correctly when you read these two sections of the reading passage. Skim through the body of the passage after you thoroughly go through the introduction and conclusion.
