In IELTS Reading there are many question types and you have to master all of them if you want to get good scores in the module. Students find this module very difficult because of these different question types and in these types true, false, not given is considered to be the most difficult type because it is confusing. Today in this article we will learn how to get a good command to solve true, false, not given questions in IELTS Reading In these kinds of questions you have a passage and 5-6 statements related to the information based on the passage. On the basis of your understanding you have to mark the statements as true false or not given.
But the complications is that you will not be able to get the sentences directly as the statement is always in the rephrased form.
Then how you can get the right answer?
In case the statement is as similar as the information give in the passage mark it true
If the information contradicts the statement mark it false
If you are unable to find the information related to the statement in the passage mark it not given
To get an accurate answer follow 5-step solving strategies
1: first try to get the keywords from the statement
2: move to the passage and find similar words according to the keywords
3: After that try to find the linking between the keywords and similar words
4: Evaluate the relation between both the words like they are identical, synonymous, antonyms or if there’s no match
5: observe the relation wisely and mark the answer accordingly.
In case you might have confusions in the true, false, not given questions you must follow the following pattern. Consider your statement first along with the equivalent statement that is present in the passage. Compare both the statements and focus on –
PARAPHRASING
Most of the times the statements that you had in the question form are rephrase. By this manner you can easily find whether the statement is true, false or not given.
SYNONYMOUS/ANTONYMS
The easiest way to get the answer is just check the keywords which can either have similar or opposite meaning. On the basis of that mark the statement true or false
Be careful about some common mistakes
1: there will be more chances to get confused between false and not given. If you are unable to get the information related to the question in the passage then mark it not given .As it is not necessary that the statement have to be either true or false.
2:don’t use your prior knowledge to answer the questions .Your prior knowledge could be different from the information that was given in the passages. Always answer the questions according to information based on the passage.
Important tips for the time management
In IELTS Reading you have to be very careful about the time management. Many students don’t get their desired band scores because they leave some questions as they get short of time.
– Most of time these kinds of questions are in chronological order. Just read the first question once you get the answer, proceed to the next question.
– If you are unable to find the location of one question. Don’t waste too much time on it just mark it not given.
_ Try to focus on some words like many, all, some, never, few, always, etc. that may slightly change the meaning of the sentence.
