How do children celebrate birthdays in your country?

Birthdays are a big deal (very important) in my country! We usually have some sort of gathering with our immediate family – typically a meal together at the birthday boy or birthday girl’s restaurant of choice for adults. Apart from this, we normally go out with drinks for an evening on the town or have a get together with drinks involved at home. On the other hand, children usually have a large party with family and friends. The parents often hire some sort of special entertainment, like a clown or even animals!

How did you celebrate your last birthday?

I took it easy on my last birthday. I had a simple meal with my family at home. As my mother is quite thoughtful, of course she made my favorite dish of hers, Shepherd’s Pie, and my favorite type of cake – red velvet. After dinner, some of my mates and I went out to local brewery to celebrate. They of course treated me (paid for me)!

What kinds of birthday gifts do you like to receive?

Any, really! Of course I appreciate all gifts, but if I could choose, I would prefer gift cards or cash. Since I’m a college student, these really help with my living costs and allow me to treat myself to something nice- like a massage, shopping, or a nice meal. To be honest, I don’t enjoy when my mother picks out (chooses) clothing for me because I end up (do without wanting or planning) looking like a grandma!

Is there a difference between the way you celebrate your birthday in the past and in the present?

Oh for sure! Birthdays are a huge deal when you’re a child. 30+ family members and friends used to gather for my special day, but now only my parents, sister, and closest mates. I used to look forward to this day all year long and make birthday lists, but now I just get some cash in a card. Although they still make it memorable for me by their thoughtful gestures, sometimes all my birthdays feel the same.

Do you like to watch the sky?

Yes, I do! Actually, my region in Spain, Andalusia, is known for having over 300 days of sun a year! With this said, there are few things more relaxing than lying out on the beach on summer afternoons, staring up at the cloudless sky. Furthermore, the sunsets here are just magnificent, often displaying colors like cotton candy. Since I live on the tenth floor of my building, I almost always watch the sunset.

Do you like to watch stars?

Absolutely! For one, it’s a very romantic activity, so I like to do it with my boyfriend. Moreover, I like to go out to star-gaze with my friends. We have a fun activity where we try to find different shapes in the stars then call them out to each other.

What is the sky like at night in your hometown?

Marvelous! Since there isn’t much light pollution here, you can see the stars very clearly at night. I sometimes like to go out on the beach at night with a blanket and gaze (watch) at the brilliance of the shining stars. It makes me feel in awe of just how amazing the universe is. There are few things more romantic than that!

Have you ever taken a course about stars?

No, I have never formally studied Astronomy since it wasn’t available at my school. However, I think it would be interesting. Fortunately, my grandfather was really into astronomy so he shared his knowledge with me, as well as gifted me an encyclopedia loaded with useful information.

What’s your favorite star?

I’d have to say the star constellation Orion, which is easily spotted on winter nights. I find this constellation interesting because it has everything, including a giant red star which could explode at any moment, a young blue star, and even a nebula (a cloud of gas) where new stars are being born. It’s complex and magnificent!

I remember a time when I failed at something I was excited about. I was trying to pass my driving test and had been studying and practicing for weeks to get ready. On the day of the test, I was confident and felt like I was ready. Unfortunately, during the driving test, I made some mistakes that caused me to fail.

The first thing that happened was I forgot to adjust my seat correctly before starting the engine which is a requirement to pass. Later, while driving around a corner, I accidentally strayed into another lane – something I could have avoided if I had paid more attention.

And then, at one point during the drive, the examiner asked me to make an emergency stop – but instead of slamming on the brakes as you’re supposed to do in such cases -I hesitated for a split second too long. These errors combined caused me to fail the test, and I had to start from scratch. But I learned from my mistakes and got back on track, studying hard for the next test.

Eventually, I passed the driving test and had a newfound confidence in my abilities behind the wheel. It was an invaluable lesson that taught me that if you take the time to focus and double-check your preparation, you can overcome almost any obstacle.

So I learned not to give up when faced with a difficult task like passing a driving test to get your license – even if you make some mistakes along the way. With proper preparation, practice, and dedication, anyone can be successful.

Have their been any failures that made you better in your life?

Oh! I had so many of them. But, there is this one particular failure that I had during my class 11th which I just cannot forget. The entire scene of the house and the relations that I had completely changed and I felt so much heat around. It was then that I decided that no matter what I am going to give it my best shot to ensure that I succeed.

Do you think there is a right time to give up or stop trying or you think one should never give up?

I think it depends on the thing that you are trying to hold on or give up. Giving up a job that you picked just for money but your heart is somewhere else, should be easy and should be done the moment you realise it.

But, leaving something you love just because there are troubles in it, is not a good idea. In situations like these, it should be more of never give up.

Can you remember a famous person who failed spectacularly at something?

The one name that comes to my mind when thinking of someone who failed spectacularly is Steve Jobs. He is that one man who failed like anything and then rose like never before. It was in his late 20s that he was kicked out of his own company, the one company that he worked out so much to build, he was kicked out, with no job at hand. When most of us would have thought it to be the end, he started a new beginning.
