Do you have a garden?

Well, I’m currently living in an apartment in a condo near the heart of Hanoi, so as you can imagine, there is no space for a garden in my living place. However, I do have a lovely garden where I grow all kinds of favourite flowers and plants in my parents’ house.

Is there any park near your house?

Fortunately yes, my house is located near a large park with a wide variety of flowers and big trees, so it is an ideal place for me to stroll around and blow off some steam every weekend.

Do you want to change anything about the park?

The park itself is really nice, but it would be better if there were more lights around the park to make it slightly brighter. To be honest, I find it a bit scary when jogging in this park at night, so I only go there during the day.

Do you have a pet?

Well, back in the day when I was in high school, I did raise a dog named Andy in my house and he was my best companion ever. But then he died in an accident, which left a deep scar in my heart, so I haven’t got any new pet since then.

What kinds of pets are common in Vietnam? Why?

I guess dogs and cats are the most common pets in Vietnam. This is simply because they are often considered to be cute, smart and loyal friends. On top of that, dogs and cats are affordable and easy to find everywhere in my country.

If you have children in the future, will you allow them to raise a pet?

Of course, I used to read an article somewhere on the Internet about the benefits of children playing with pets in which the author says that pets can be good companions for children especially those with special needs or special medical conditions such as autism. Well, raising a pet can be troublesome sometimes but I believe they are real good partners in our life.

PART – 2 CUE CARD

Describe an occasion when you unexpectedly met someone you know.

You should say:

• who it was

• where you met this person

• what you did when you met

And and explain why you were surprised to meet this person.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Well, it doesn’t happen a lot when you unexpectedly meet someone you know. But a couple of days ago when I was out for lunch, I bumped into a high school classmate whom I haven’t seen since we graduated.

I was walking along the street when I saw him standing in front of a restaurant. He hasn’t changed a bit, so I recognized him right away. I approached him and said hi; however, it took him a while to realize that I was his high school classmate. At that moment, I felt very awkward. Luckily, it didn’t last long and we started to give each other a quick update about our lives recently, such as where we are working currently, our families and, of course, we swapped phone numbers and promised to keep in touch in future.

Since we were both in a hurry, we didn’t spend much time chatting to each other. However, it always feels good when you unexpectedly meet a long-lost friend. If we had had more time, we’d probably have reminisced about our high school memories with all the crazy things that we did back then.

PART – 3 FOLLOW UPS

How do people express happiness in your culture?

People express happiness in different ways in my culture. I think in all cultures, a smile is the most common way to express happiness. In my culture, people express it by celebrating their happiness with their loved ones by having a party, cooking something special, buying gifts, etc.

Do you think happiness has any effect on people? How?

Happiness is contagious. It spreads and uplifts the moods of everyone around you. It gives meaning and purpose to life. It also has many health benefits like better sleep, lower risk of cardiovascular diseases, stronger immune system, etc.

IELTS Speaking Interview

How can people be happy?

People can be happy by focusing on good things and being satisfied with what they have in life. Also, people should remind themselves that life can be tough at times but if they stay positive, they can conquer the hurdles and get past the difficult situations.
Another way to be happy is to be with people who bring you joy and stay away from negative people who try to bring you down.

Is it good for people to be unhappy? Why?

No, it’s not good to be unhappy. Good mental health is very important for our wellbeing and being unhappy can lead to depression and anxiety. Sometimes it’s hard to force the mind to stay positive and in such cases, meditation and deep breathing can help us stabilize our mind and chase the blues away.
