  • what it is
  • how many of your friends own it
  • if you want to own it
  • and explain what you would do once you own it.

A smartphone is no longer a luxury; rather, it has become a necessity in this modern time. Almost everyone has a smartphone in my surrounding, but, I do not have a smartphone of my own. My family is yet to buy me one as they think I should not have it until I turn 18. Since almost all of my friends have one or more smartphones, I think I should also have one as soon as I turn 18 – which is just a year away from now.

Having a smartphone is very common in our country, even for young students who are just over 12 years old or so. Many parents view a smartphone as an essential tool to keep in touch with their children. As a result, almost all of my friends and classmates have a smartphone.

Most of them use their phones to talk to their family and friends, browse the internet, play games and maintain their social profiles – among other things. But, my family consider having a smartphone is a distraction from academic studies and outdoor activities. Perhaps, my father is not in favour of allowing me to own a smartphone while I am still young, and I have not argued with them on this issue.

Definitely, I want to have a smartphone of my own. But I would not want to hurt my parents’ emotions by owning it without their consent or support. I’m over 17 already, and if I wait a year or so, I will be able to own it without causing any hard feelings to my parents, who have decided not to buy me a smartphone for the sake of my own good.

I think I will do a lot of things once I have my own smartphone. First and foremost, I will use the built-in high-resolution camera to capture some nice pictures and then upload them to my Instagram account. Then, I will download and install some useful applications that would help me keep in touch with my family and friends.

Perhaps I will also install a couple of games to test them out. Not to mention, I sometimes play games on my friend’s mobile which seems really interesting to me. So I will download and play some games, I guess. Finally, I will browse the internet to learn new things and get help on my academic subjects.

What is the impact of cellphones?

Like most technologies, cellphones surely have made a place in our day to day lives. With the coming of smart phones, people now use it for almost everything. Gone are the days when people bought cameras. The only people who buy cameras nowadays are either the camera lovers or professional photographers. So, the general public has now become a photographer. People carry phones everywhere because they need the next most important thing, internet. Internet allows people to communicate and do so much more. I think cell phones have in a way changed the way people live their lives.

What do you think about people who speak loudly on cellphone in public places?

Be it public place or anywhere, speaking loudly on phone, I believe is quite unethical. When one speaks loudly on phone, firstly it disturbs the other person on phone. The disadvantage with phones has been that one cannot see the expression of other when talking, so speaking loudly could be taken any ways. Apart from the person on the other end, it also creates nuisance for the people around.

IELTS Speaking Interview

Do young people use cellphones the same way old people do?

I think definitely not. But for that matter, in my opinion it is not just about old and young, it is also about two different individuals. I have seen older people loving whatsapp and facebook and using it extensively. And even some young, who prefer not using them. But, if we take it in a more general way, young people often click photos and listen to music or probably play games on the phone. However, older people are more fond of chatting with their peers.

What is your opinion on selfies with cell phone?

Selfies are a great way of expressing oneself. But, overdone, just like other things does great avoidance. Selfies in a positive way, do help a person knowing their individuality. So, it tells that one need not to be part of something to be happy. In my opinion it’s good, only if not done extensively.
