IELTS Writing Task 2

It is often argued that children, these days, are given too much freedom as compared to the past. This essay believes that this is a very negative development because adolescents are highly likely to indulge in bad activities and have a lack of moral values.

The primary reason why mothers and fathers should not give too much liberty to their kids is that they can involve in illegal activities. This is because when parents give too much freedom, this often leads to delinquency, which can ruin their whole lives. Therefore, it can be said that children should be properly monitored while they are growing up. For instance, it has been found in a recent study by Cambridge University that students whose parents gave more than enough freedom to them were 82% more likely to commit a crime.

Another reason is that children often do not know about moral standards. This is because, in the past, parents used to teach their wards the importance of good behavior by spending some quality time with them, whereas, nowadays, most parents overlook these crucial lessons because both parents are working. As a result, youngsters do not give respect to others because they are not taught important morals. For example, one of my relatives gave too much freedom to their son while he was growing up. Consequently, he does not give respect to elders and talk to anyone politely.

In conclusion, nowadays, parents give so much more freedom to their offspring than in the past and this is a negative development because this can lead young people to indulge in wrongdoings and they do not have knowledge about basic morals.
