Many people use distance-learning programmes (study material post, TV, Internet, etc.) to study at home, but some people think that it cannot bring the same benefits of attending college or university. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

SAMPLE ANSWER

Nowadays, students are more prone to learn in front of computers. With good reasons, many people question whether the state-of-the-art technology can eventually change the way we learn. Others, however, make a convincing argument that the traditional classroom-based learning has its own limitations. Considering both sides, my view is that the new program can bring far more benefits than the traditional education.

First, it is obvious that, for any people, as long as they can access to Internet, can obtain the education resources easily. It is especially beneficial to people who live in a remote area without schools or are short of funds to pay for tuition. So, it is truly a convenient way for people who are keen on learning.

Moreover, the distance learning can help itself integrate its best knowledge materials and release them for sharing. For example, in the last 5 years, some prestigious universities, including Yale, Cambridge and Oxford University, have published their most famous professors’ courses in the Internet, followed crazily by a sheer volume of students all over the world. If more and more universities take part in the program, students will be facing a large wide and varied range of knowledge and the benefits for the whole human beings is unparalleled.

That is not to say that traditional education should be neglected. Teachers not only can impart knowledge, but also they can correct, motivate and interact with students. But unfortunately it has drawbacks due to its inflexibility and lack of communications with teachers after class.

In sum, we should fully harness the modern technology to make the education opportunities available to people; meanwhile, we should not ignore the importance of conventional learning. Only by doing so can we bridge the gap between rich and poor, and thus make the whole society more impartial.
