Sample Answer:-

The bar chart depicts the monthly expenditure on food, gas and clothing of a family living in the USA in 2010. Overall, it can be seen that levels of expenditure fluctuated over the period.

To begin, in January the most money was spent on food, at approximately $500 per month.  Although expenditure on food increased slightly the following month, it then fell to account for the lowest expenditure of all the items at the end of the period at just over $300.

Gas appeared to follow the opposite pattern to food spending. It started lower at about $350 per month, falling in the following month, and then increasing significantly to finish at just under $600 in April.

Clothing, which at just over $200 accounted for the lowest expenditure at the beginning of the period, fluctuated dramatically over the time frame. After reaching around the same levels as food in February (nearly $600), it dropped markedly in March, then jumped to just under $700 in the final month.

With the exception of an increase in March, average spending decreased slightly over the four months.

General Writing Task 1:-

Write a letter to complain about a dangerous situation when some adolescents let their dogs run wild in public.

Sample Answers

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to Whitehorse Council in regards to a group of adolescents that regularly allow their dogs to run free at Springfield Park in Doncaster where young children can often be found using the playground equipment provided for them.

Often on a Saturday morning there are a group of young people at Springfield Park who allow their dogs to run free throughout the park and threaten other users of the park, particularly the elderly and small children. On one occasion a large dog ran into a small child. Fortunately, the child although very frightened, was not harmed by the incident. However, there is the risk that one of these dogs could attack a small child or an elderly person leading to very serious consequences.

I am requesting that some of your rangers visit the park on the weekend and observe the problem and take appropriate action to ensure the safety of the community,

Kind regards,

Michelle Harris

Writing Task 2 AC+GT)

Today, the expensive price of popular consumer products is because of the power of advertising and not the real needs of people. Do you agree or disagree?

Sample Answer

There is little doubt that the price of consumer goods is strongly influenced by advertising. Many advertisements seek to increase people’s desire for a product by emotional appeals that have little to do with the true cost of producing a product or its impact on quality of life and are driven by companies’ self-interest. In this essay the impact of the advertising of high-end goods on people’s lives will be discussed.

Emotional appeals are a key component of advertising and can have an enormous impact on purchasing habits. For example, leather handbags vary in price from tens of dollars to tens of thousands of dollars. The extraordinarily large price range is clearly not justifiable based on variations in labour, materials or function, therefore the purchase of extremely expensive fashion items is either not rational, or driven by thinking that is not related to the product and its function. The key reason that individuals make such purchases is typically related to the way that advertising suggests that others will perceive them. Consumers may hope that they are seen as being cleverer, more beautiful or more successful. These are reasons with limited merit as most people spend their energy focusing on themselves rather than the possessions of those around them. The belief that owning high status products will change how others view them or how they view themselves may lead to inappropriate purchases because consumers are not making decisions based on what is in their best interest, but in the often mistaken belief that these products will impress other people.

Advertising is driven by companies’ self-interest rather than in the interests of consumers or society as a whole, and can be very divisive. It is sometimes used as a tool to convince people to pay unnecessarily high prices to distinguish themselves through wealth. It preys on unattractive qualities including the need to prove that people are somehow better than other people. In extreme cases, such purchases should be viewed as vulgar rather than a sign of success – it is highly undesirable that sometimes individuals value an expensive trinket over the satisfaction of creating meaningful and lasting change in the lives of others.

In summary, advertising can have a pervasive effect on thinking and it is critical that before making significant purchases that the underlying reason for those purchases is examined. Every person has limited resources and should consider carefully the most appropriate way of allocating those resources.

PART 2 Cue Card

Describe an interesting public place in your hometown, or where you are living now, that you like to go to
You should say:

  • where it is
  • how often you go there
  • what you do there
  • and explain why you think it is interesting.

Band 8.5 Model Answer:

Today, I’m going to share with you an interesting public place where I really enjoy going to hang out with my close friends in my spare time, which is a lovely café named X.

It is situated at Y – a small quiet lane near my university in the centre of my hometown. The coffee house is decorated in an old, traditional French style, with a lot of paintings on the wall, and it attracts a lot of foreign customers. As a full-time student, I have been so caught up in my studies, therefore, I just take a day off to go there on weekends after a long stressful week.
There are many live music events taking place there performed by acoustic guitarists, so I often check them out on the internet and come with my friends. Because this type of music is my kind of thing, I am in my element just humming the tune of the songs and relaxing in a comfy chair to enjoy myself.

The fast food tastes quite savoury and especially the coffee in X is always irresistibly delicious. That might be the reason why it was ranked among the top 5 best coffee shops in 2015. What I really love is how cozy the atmosphere is, something which I have not found in any other coffee shop yet.

Whenever things go wrong, I often go there as a hideaway to escape from all the pressures and order a cup of coffee to relieve my stress. It always works wonders. I find it extremely therapeutic and soothing. Therefore, it’s more than likely that I will still keep coming back to it as my favourite place in the near future.

PART 3 Discussion

Do you think cities worth visiting is also suitable to live in?
Yes, I think so. To me, cities worth visiting are places with cheap, efficient transportation, low crime rates, and a clean, healthy environment. Cities like that would be wonderful to live in.

What is the difference between the people living in the city and people living in the countryside?
People living in the countryside tend to be self-employed and work in farming or other jobs that involve physical labor, while those living in the city usually work for companies or organizations in jobs that focus more on mental labor.

What is the difference between big cities and small cities?
Big cities have more people and higher population densities; as a result, in big cities roads are usually more crowded and there are more apartment buildings. Products and services in big cities also tend to be more expensive than in small cities.

What is the difference between the north and south part of your country?
The north and the south use different dialects. We use different words, phrases, and even pronounce words differently, so I may have difficulty understanding someone from the south. Another difference between the two regions is the weather. The south is consistently hotter than the north. Rain in the south also comes in fast and rarely lasts longer than a couple of hours, while in the north, it tends to drizzle throughout the day.

What makes one country different from the other?
Countries differ in terms of language, history and culture. Laws and regulations are also another aspect. Traffic laws, for example, might vary from one country to another.
