Academic Writing Task 1:-

The charts below show the main reasons for study among students of different age groups and the amount of support they received from employers.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Sample Answer:-

The first graph shows that there is a gradual decrease in study for career reasons with age. Nearly 80% of students under 26 years, study for their career. This percentage gradually declines by 10-20% every decade. Only 40% of 40-49yr olds and 18% of over 49yr olds studying for career reasons in late adulthood.

Conversely, the first graph also shows that study stemming from interest increases with age. There are only 10% of under 26yr olds studying out of interest. The percentage increases slowly till the beginning of the fourth decade, and increase dramatically in late adulthood. Nearly same number of 40-49yr olds study for career and interest however, 70% of over 49yr olds study for interest in comparison to 18% studying foe career reasons in that age group.

The second graph shows that employer support is maximum (approximately 60%) for the under 26yr students. It drops rapidly to 32% up to the third decade of life, and then increase in late adulthood up to about 44%. It is unclear whether employer support is only for career-focused study but the highest level is for those students who mainly study for career purposes.

General Writing Task 1:-

You are going to have a business trip and arrange your friend to look after your children. Write a letter to the friend. In your letter, you should:

– tell him/her which kind of food your children like and dislike
– tell him/her which kind of activities your children can attend
– tell him/her the time you will pick up your children

Sample Answer:-

Dear Lily,

I am writing to ask for your help to take care of my kid – Tony, when I am on a business trip from next Monday to next Friday.

As you know, Tony has a fever for all sweet food, especially ice cream. But he is allowed to have it only once every two weeks because he has already got two bad teeth. Therefore, the whole next week he would have no chance to access sweets. Please show your mercy by being tough since he is very good at begging. Besides, he hates fruits but he is really into fruit juice. I would appreciate it very much if you can make one cup of juice every day for him. By the way, I would buy those he likes and take them to your place later this weekend. Except for the above two things, Tony is a cute company and an easy-to-please boy that will bring you little trouble.

Plus, he enjoys playing basketball very much, and I have noticed the basket in your backyard. That would be his playground where he can hang around after school. He sometimes would bring some other kids and play group basketball game. So make some rules when I am away. One-hour physical practice is adequate for a 7-year-old boy, or he would make trouble in having a sound sleep at night by being too excited.

I will pick him up on Friday next week. I’ll give you a call right after my landing off.

In some countries, private cars are now banned from certain city centres. What are the advantages of such a system and do you feel that this is something that most cities should adopt?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Sample Answer:-

Banning cars from city is a recent trend and it can be seen in various cities around the world. Certain advantages and disadvantages immediately spring to mind when considering this step that city councils are taking.

The advantages are clear. Since cars were introduced, city centres have always been areas where air quality is poor due to the amount of emissions, which in turn affects people’s health. City centres become quieter and safer for people to wander around shopping and enjoying themselves. Access to city centres can still be good, as it is usually only private vehicles that are banned, and buses and taxis can still take people in and out of the city centre areas. Many towns also operate a park and ride scheme, so people can leave their cars in safe car parks in the outskirts of towns and travel with a dedicated bus service to the town centres. It would seem hard to criticize this kind of scheme.

There are critics though to the scheme of banning cars in city centres. City centre shop keepers have often been vocal opponents, as they believe that fewer people will come to the city centres and therefore their incomes will be affected. The general public also sometimes object, as people often like to travel in their own private vehicles. In actual fact, banning cars from city centres has in practice not reduced the number of people who travel to city centres to shop. People like shopping and socializing in city centres and they just adapt to the situation. There is no answer to people who want to drive their own cars. They hopefully will just realise that the sacrifice of not driving their cars is outweighed by the health and lifestyle improvements of a cleaner and quieter city centre.

In conclusion, there are far more and more significant advantages to banning cars from city centres than allowing them. It is therefore a measure that most city centres should adopt for their citizens.

Part – 1 Intro Part

What is your full name?
My name us Sunil jagtap.

Can I see your ID?
Of course, here is my ID card.

Where are you from?
I am originally from Ratnagiri, but now I live in Mumbai.

Do you work or study?
I am working at the moment.

What do you do for a job?
I am working as an accountant at a school here.

Do you like your job? Why?
Yes, I do because it is very interesting, and I learn a lot of new things from my seniors in the staff and sometimes from the teachers, too. Moreover, I happen to talk to children there every day, which is very joyful as I love children.

Where do you like to go to buy flowers?
There are a multitude of places for buying flowers. They could be gas stations, roadside stalls, grocery stores as well as the usual florists. Depending upon the occasion or event, I choose the vendor, and to some extent I’ll also consider for who (m) I’m buying them. If there is a memorable or great occasion, I would usually drive down to the florist because he may have a range of novelties with a beautifully customized bouquet. For such events, I may also examine important elements of the bouquet such as freshness of flowers, leaves, flower heads and their arrangements. I probably pick some flowers up at grocery store or gas station if the occasion isn’t so special. I think all places are good depending upon what you need.

On what occasions would you give someone flowers?
In the context of India, flowers are generally presented on the special occasions. I give a bouquet of flowers to my parents on their marriage anniversary every year. I would also buy flowers for my girlfriend on our anniversary or on her birthday. She really adores them especially the tulip flowers. Whenever somebody graduates in my family and if I were to attend their graduation ceremony, that special event is marked with the bouquet of flowers with a surprise gift. Then more importantly I don’t miss giving flowers at anybody’s funerals because it is a tradition.

Are flowers important in your culture?
They were not so significant in the past but I feel that it has become a kind of a custom these days in my country. Personally, I had better gift something meaningful to the people. That makes sense because flowers will wither soon. One thing I know that women love flowers. I’ve no idea why they love them so much. I guess the tradition of giving flowers is more remembered in a romantic event. I don’t see any association of particular flower with any special event or purpose. Broadly speaking, giving flowers is a custom.

Describe a time someone or something made noise

Sample Answer:-

Noise pollution has become an inevitable part of our life. Whether we like it or not, we have to tolerate it. We can’t escape it. Here, I’m going to talk about a situation when there was too much noise. A religious function, which we call Jagrata or jagran, was held last Sunday in my neighborhood. In such functions people sing hymns and chants in praise of gods and goddesses the whole night long. The function started at 8 pm and went up to 5 pm. There is a law against using loudspeakers after 10 pm but people don’t abide by the law in the name of religion. They do not realize that some people might be suffering from excessive noise. I was not able to sleep the whole night. I closed all windows of my house to reduce that sound, but it did not make any difference. Then I put earplugs in my ears but that too did not work. There might have been many other people who suffered like I did that night. I am not against any religious event, but I’m definitely against using loud speakers after 10 PM. Such laws should be implemented more strictly and I believe that the use of pressure horns also must be restricted. Noise pollution has a negative effect on our mental health as well as physical health. It can lead to hearing impairment, Fatigue, Heart problems, Insomnia, Anxiety, Depression and so on. It can also reduce the work efficiency. One of my uncles has come from Canada and he tells me that in Canada people are not using horns unnecessarily and still the traffic runs very smoothly. I hope we all realize the menace of noise pollution and do our bit to reduce it from our lives.

Part – 3 Follow up Questions

Do you like to live in a noisy place?
No, definitely not. But unfortunately it is difficult to find places in cities, which are noise free.

Do you like to go to noisy places?
Once in a while, I like to attend parties and functions where DJ is playing loud music and I can dance and enjoy with my friends and relatives.

Do you like to go to places where there are many people?
I am very social by nature. I definitely like going out and meeting people. I love to interact with new people and make friends

Do you think that cities will become noisier in the future?
Yes, I suppose so. Whether we like it or not, the noise producing things are increasing and so it is quite probable that cities will become noisier in the future.

Where can you hear a loud noise?
We can hear loud noise all around us. There is unnecessary honking of pressure horns from vehicles. Industries are making noise. People use loudspeakers for personal functions and neighbours are forced to bear the noise.
