Academic Writing Task 1:-

The charts below describe the population in Iran and Spain in 2010 and the expected population in 2060.
Summarise the information in the charts and make comparisons where appropriate.

Sample Answer:-

The two bar charts show the actual and expected percentage of the population in three age groups (0-15, 16-55 and 55+ years) in Iran and Spain in 2010 and 2060.

In Iran in 2010 the number of people in the 0-15 age group was just under half (48.2%) of the total population, while the population aged 16-55 years was slightly higher (48.3%). In contrast, the number of Iranian people aged over 55

represented only 3.5% of the population. By 2060, it is expected that the population will have aged significantly, with the number of people aged 0-15 years expected to decrease to 43.1%, while the number of people in the 16-55 and 55+ age groups is expected to increase to 50.2% and 6.8%, respectively.

In Spain in 2010 the percentage of young people was much lower (14.7%) compared to Iran, while the 16-55 and 55+ age groups made up 61.4% and 23.9%of the population, respectively. By 2060 the population of Spain is expected to age further with the number of people in the 0-15, 16-55 and 55+ age groups expected to be 11.3%, 48.5% and 40.2%, respectively.

General Writing Task 1:-

You had a very good experience in a local restaurant with your family. Write a letter to a newspaper to tell them about it, describe what you liked about it, and why you think the restaurant is worth visiting.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to you regarding The Caulfield Gazette’s request (15/10/13) to notify your newspaper of excellent businesses in the local area.

Last night my husband and two children went to Mario’s Pizzeria on Hadfield Road for a meal and were delighted with our experience there. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the overall quality of service was excellent. Our orders arrived quickly, were hot, of a good size and inexpensive. In addition the drinks were reasonably priced. We were particularly impressed that when our children became a little impatient towards the end of the meal, the staff provided pencils and drawing material for them and greatly eased the burden of what had been a long and tiring day.

I hope that you will publish this letter so that many other people in the area can enjoy this excellent restaurant and that it will thrive and be a part our community for a long time to come,

News editors decide what to broadcast on television and what to write in newspapers. What factors influence these decisions? Do you think we become used to bad news? Should more good news be reported?

Sample Answer:-

News editors have challenging decisions to make when deciding what to publish because they must consider the interests of many competing factors. The primary consideration for editors is the interests of their employers, or the government if they play a significant role in determining the future of media outlets. If owners have no particular interest in a story, editors will often choose to publish many negative stories as they often contain warnings for the general public, but this should be balanced with positive stories to avoid pessimism and cynicism in society. In this essay the role of the media will be discussed.

Editors are employees and although they make decisions about what is to be published, they make those decisions with the interests of their owners in mind. Media organisations often take a political stance and will favour one political party over another to reflect the interests of the owner. In this way the media influences political debate and are therefore very powerful. This situation is both undesirable and unavoidable but the overall impact of individual media organisations has become less because of the wide availability of different information sources on the Internet.

If there is little political gain in a story then editors will generally choose to publish more negative than positive stories in the media because these stories often serve as warnings to the general public. For example, stories of children dying because of being left in cars on hot days and people charged with serious offences such as drug trafficking in other countries are useful reminders to the population of the serious consequences of these actions.

However, it is important to balance negative articles with more positive articles to avoid people becoming depressed and cynical and to remind people of the goodness that exists in almost everyone. Stories of people rescuing others or providing support to the ill and underprivileged are important in reminding us of the many positive things that we do for others and are done for us each day.

In summary, news editors represent the owners of media organisations and will make decisions in their best interest. Where there is little or no interest they will usually report more negative stories as these serve as warnings to the public, but balance these with positive ones to remind us of the goodness we all possess.

What is your full name?
My name is Arshdeep Kaur.

Did you have to run during school sport lessons?
Yes. There were a variety of running activities that my PE teachers got me involved in when I was younger. For instance, before taking part in team sport activities, we’d warm up by doing light jogs around the gymnasium. We also performed a lot of short and fast paced speed drills to help increase our leg muscles and endurance.

Are there any good places to go running where you live?
It’s sad to say, but in the city center, most people prefer the safe and boring option of going to fitness clubs and running on treadmills. However, in the suburbs there are some large scenic parks with soft and even surface running paths. Another option is using school race tracks, which are sometimes available for public visitors to use.

Have you done any long distance running?
Well, I’ve never participated in any formal long distance running events. However, when I was a member of my school rugby team, I had to run a lot. If my memory serves me correctly, my coach directed my team to run 10 non-stop laps around the field every practice. I believe that is equivalent to running around 3000 meters – I guess.

Would you choose to watch important running races on TV?
I find it fairly boring to watch most running events. That being said, I’m always intrigued to know who the fastest runner in the world is, and that is often considered as the winner of the prestigious 100 meter dash. So anytime the Olympics or World Championships occurs, I don’t mind tuning in to watch the world’s fastest sprinters.

Describe a happy family event from your childhood.

Band 8.5 Model Answer

There are numerous happy events in my life that I can recall and among them, I would like to talk about the time when my family gathered to make X cake for the New Year holiday.

The New Year is a very special traditional holiday in my country. It was probably my most favorite holiday when I was a small girl as my family had a lot of activities to celebrate this occasion. Among them, making the X cake made me excited the most. The X cake is made of glutinous rice, green beans and fat pork, wrapped in banana leaves in the shape of a square. I often played with my older brother when my parents prepared the ingredients for the cake. And then, my father lit a small fire to boil the cake overnight.

It was perhaps the only time of the year when I was allowed to stay up late. While my family was sitting around the warm fire, my grandmother would tell the old legendary story about the X cake to commemorate the filial affection of one prince to his father and remind us of the long –lasting tradition of our country.

In recent years, my family has not had enough time for making the Xcake on our own. However, to me, a ready-made cake that we buy from a local market can’t bring the special feeling and replace the taste of a X cake from my childhood. I hope that my family can continue our tradition in the coming years.

PART – 3 Discussion

How people celebrate public events?
I would say a gathering with food, alcohol, friends, and family is the most common way to celebrate an event across the world. More specifically, for events such as New Years, people like to crowd a central area, such as a main square, usually for a concert or some sort of speaker or count down. Furthermore, people tend to like using fireworks, bells, air horns or even just shouting when they feel excited about something.

Do you think it is important to celebrate events?
I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, I think it’s nice to celebrate events to have something to look forward to (feel excited for) throughout the year, but I dislike the pressure aspect of special events. For example, people tend to get so stressed about buying gifts and decorating their homes during the Christmas season that they forget to simply enjoy their time with family and friends. However, when I think about it, I couldn’t imagine a life without celebrating special events.

Should the event be prepared in advance?
I would say so. When we procrastinate (wait to do something until the last minute), it tends to cause things to get pretty hectic (crazy) at the last minute. However, when we plan too far in advance, it may not go as planned, as things tend to change. For example, maybe an unexpected event arises which causes the plan to change. On the other hand, I don’t think we should plan every detail in advance, as I’ve found that sometimes the spontaneous (unplanned) moments are the most enjoyable. So, all in all it’s about balance. I’d like to have a rough plan (an idea but not a strict plan) of the event in advance, but not overly detailed nor several months in advance.

How can you prepare an activity?
Well, firstly, I would like to know the approximate number of guests and their ages. Secondly, I would like to brainstorm (think of ideas) some different ideas of things that would be appealing to the audience. After this, I would find an appropriate place to hold the event, such as a home, a rented venue, outdoor area, etc. and start to think about the type of food and refreshments would be appealing (tasteful) for this event. After this, I would start to officially send out invitations via mail or email and see how many RSVP (respond to event). Upon obtaining the official numbers, I would either make the food and buy the drinks or hire a catering company to take care of the party. As the event approaches, I would double-check with the guests to see how many are coming. I’d say this plan would lead to a successful event.
