Instructions about IELTS writing

In general task, one, you will be given a question statement along with the instructions point which you have to cover in your letter. Below is the sample of the instruction that you will have in your task 1 of general training. 

GENERAL TRAINING LETTER

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You are due to start a new job next week but you will not be able to because you have some problems.

Write a letter to your new employer. In your letter

• explain your situation
• describe your problems
• tell him/her when you think you can start.

You should write at least 150 words.
You do NOT need to write your own address.

Tips you need to follow:

  1. In total, you need to spend 20 minutes for writing this letter. Spend almost 3 to 5 minutes in planning your sample letter addressed for writing. At last you should leave two minutes for the proofreading at the end so that you can check the mistakes that you have committed.
  2. Have a safe writing. It means that you can exceed your word limit up to 160 or 180 words. You must not exceed your letter writing above 200 as that would be wastage of time.
  3. Don’t mention your personal address in the letter.
  4. The salutation must be proper. Make sure that you know the person to whom you are writing from the statement. This will only help you to know what style of writing you actually need to use, and in what tone you have to write your letter.
  5. All of the instruction points must be included in your letter along with the different body paragraphs. In order to make it sure to the examiner, you have precisely follow the pattern.
  6. Always start your letter with the accurate salutation and sign off should be proper.

Aim of the letter

As general training task, one has different types in it so your letter can have different purposes and that will direct you only to follow the style of the particular letter. even though the type of letter is mentioned, whether it is formal or informal, but you come across it clearly by reading the instructions.

  • complaints (usually formal)
  • invitations (usually personal or semi-formal)
  • applications or resignations (usually formal)
  • request (any style common)
  • making arrangements (often formal)
  • explanation (sometimes semi-formal or personal)
  • informative / news letter (often personal / semi-formal but formal can also appear)
  • apology (could be any style)

Letter opening

As the letter starts with the opening statement which usually direct that what is the mean purpose of the letter writing and what form of letter it is.

This opening statement depends upon the letter time whether it is formal or informal. Below are the example of both the letter openings: 

Formal Letter Opening Statement 

I am writing concerning the position of Assistant Office Manager that I am due to begin next Monday. However, a problem has arisen.

Structure and paragraph

While you write your letter, you must mention your content into different paragraphs. This also plays a pivotal role in your writing as the examiner will be marking on your ability of effective paragraphing.

So you need to be precise while you read the instructions as they will assist you to follow the pattern of the writing. Below is the structure given that you can follow but follow it accordingly to the letter type. 

Structure:

  • title
  • opening statement – reason for writing
  • body paragraph A (one point with detail)
  • body paragraph B (another point with detail)
  • body paragraph C (final point with detail)
  • closing statement (if needed)
  • signing off
  • name (choose a name or use your own)
