How to know? Is it an Informal Letter? 

Whenever, you read out a statement you will get to know through the instructions that to whom you have to write a letter. In an informal letter, it is told to write to ‘a friend’. In all other situations, you will write a formal letter. 

First and third letters are to someone we don’t know and they are therefore formal ones. 

In second type, you need to write letter to your manager. Number of people are friends with their managers, but you need to disregard this when writing IELTS letters. This is because of the formal format and in this case manager remains the same as co-worker. 

The last letter particularly mentions ‘friend’ and we can, therefore, apply informal tone. 

It always happen that IELTS examiner try tricks upon you because they want you to get distracted and they want you to write about a work related topic, but don’t let them to do that. So, if it is asked ‘write a letter to a friend’ make sure you use informal language.

FORMAT OF AN INFORMAL LETTER 

Each General training letter have same format. They always mention, why you are writing the letter, to whom you have to write and three bullet points which you have to cover. 

This is very useful, while you prepare a structure of your letter. 

Planning is always integral for any of the part of writing. Sometime, it seems to be the wastage of the time, but you should preplan for each task. Planning is important because some of the students lost their ways while writting the letter and didn’t get the points to write further. So, it is essential to write letter in an organised manner.

Paragraph 1 – Write the main notion, why you writing the letter. 

Paragraph 2 – Write down 1st bullet point and there supporting information

Paragraph 3 – Write down 2nd bullet point and supporting details of that.

Paragraph 4 – Write down 3rd bullet point and supporting details of that.

There’s no need to change this structure and you may use as it is again and again. Just make a plan before writing the letter so as to express your ideas in an organised manner.

INFORMAL LANGUAGE 

You need to use informal language in this letter type, but it doesn’t mean that you will just use simple words and write in the language you like. This point need to be pointed! as you have to use accurate grammar, spellings and vocabulary. 

Don’t use short forms such as ‘bcz’ or ‘luv’. Avoid using acronyms like ‘LOL’ or ‘OMG’. 

You must use contractions as it’s the best way to show the examiner that you better know, how to write an informal letter. Contractions such as I’ve, I’d, I’ll and many others.
