BEST TIP : LET’S COMPARE CONJUNCTIONS AND PREPOSITIONS

In English, we often come across two terms : CONJUNCTIONS and PREPOSITIONS. Today let’s compare both of these and learn the difference between them.

Introduction:

Both a conjunction and a preposition are words that show how two or more words relate to one another.

The main difference between the two is that a preposition must always be followed by a noun, pronoun, or complement; on the other hand, a conjunction can be followed by one of the aforementioned things or another conjunction.

Conjunctions and prepositions share many similarities, but they also have significant differences. Prepositions cannot stand on their own in a sentence, whereas conjunctions can. This is one of the main differences between these two parts of speech.

CONJUNCTIONS:-

Conjunctions are words which assist you with communicating a connection between two things. Most of the time, they are used to show how two ideas or sentences connect.

Utilizations of Conjunctions

To join phrases or sentences (Planning Conjunctions) e.g.: After running to school, I played.

To join phrases (Complementary Conjunctions) e.g.: sleeting dogs and cats.

Subordinating Conjunctions are used to emphasize words, phrases, and the like, such as: He would bathe before eating.

can be used as prepositions when they are followed by a verb and a noun or pronoun, such as: He claims that she will arrive.)

Some verbs are used when joined with a conjunction, such as: You will miss the train if you do not act quickly.)

to join phrases and words (such as: hot and dry conditions).

They can also be used to convey time (for example: whenever, whenever, immediately, etc.)

 Division of Conjunctions

Although there are numerous conjunctions in English, they can be broadly divided into two groups: subordinating and coordinating conjunctions. All conjunctions have same example for their formation for example In the event that the word ‘and’ is formed, any remaining conjunctions are additionally formed similarly.

PREPOSITIONS:-

A preposition is a connector which is utilized to show the connection between a thing or pronoun and one more word in a sentence. A thing always goes along with it. Prepositions are mostly used in clauses, sentences, or phrases.

 Uses of prepositions

to indicate place, such as: in, on, under, across, except, etc. Under the table, on the road, and in his room.

To indicate the time, for instance: He was late getting home after a long day at work.

To show reason e.g.: He is my friend’s brother.

To show reason e.g.: She went to class to breeze through her tests.

THE DIFFERENCE

1) The first difference between a preposition and a conjunction is that a preposition can be followed by a verb or a noun, whereas a conjunction always follows a verb.

2) A preposition cannot be used in a sentence on its own, whereas a conjunction can.

3) Conjunctions are primarily used to join clauses, sentences, and words, whereas prepositions are typically used to demonstrate the relationship between particular words, phrases, etc.

4) While conjunctions do not represent time, a preposition does.

5) While prepositions are never reversible, conjugations are always reversible. For instance: He is taller than me/I’m more modest than him . Also, in the event that we witch them, it would sound off-kilter. For instance, He is taller than I am, and He is taller than I am.

6) Certain prepositions cannot be combined with other words. E.g.: 7) Some conjunctions cannot be used as prepositions, such as in, for, about, etc. E.g.: before but after can function as conjunctions.

8) For instance: The man is late in life/The lady was extremely youthful yet the lady was youthful is viewed as off-base since ‘youthful’ has no association with ‘lady’ at all. As a result, it cannot be used with a noun; however, it can be used with a conjunction, such as: She was beautiful and very young.

Though there are significant differences between these two parts of speech, conjunctions and prepositions both help you make sentences by connecting ideas. There is always a connection between two words, phrases, or clauses in a conjunction.
